Appendix I: Meditations

The Meditations presented here have been developed from the pairing of the Major cards, the pairing of the verses of Liber 231, and the pairing of the initiatory correspondences of the Hebrew alphabet. The number of pairings total 11, the number of Change and of Magick. Each pairing is also associated with a stage of the Neophyte Ritual, the basis of Golden Dawn magic.

Thus we see that Liber 231 was created on the basis of the study of the Kabbalah, the use of the rituals of the Golden Dawn to attain the Holy Guardian Angel, and the names of Enochian Spirits. The reader is refered to the description of the magical weapons in the commentary on Column XLI in Liber 777. Rather than try to analyse the sigils, I suggest the reader study the magical weapons and discover the abstract forms of these weapons that can be found in the Sigils of Liber 231.

Nowhere is the inner nature of the Arthurian Tradition more clearly focused than in the figure of Merlin. Advisor to three kings, prophet, magician and wiseman, his shadowy presence seldom takes any single form for long enough to observe his real nature. His genesis, within the Matter of Britain, is almost as complex.

One commentator has called him a god of the ancient, native people of Britain; his home, at Maridunum, is also the site of his cult (2). Others have seen in him a shaman or a wildman (83), an inner Guardian of the Land (32), or a seer whose prophecies have a very real validity for our own time (78). But he eludes any fixed definitions; his origins and his ultimate fate remains as mysterious as at the time of his first appearance. Even his own words render him more opaque:

In Crowley's heavily sanitized version of his time at the abbey in his Confessions, he describes Thelemic child-rearing practices in a few lines:

In the abbey, our plan was to watch the children to discover in what direction they wanted to develop, having given them the greatest possible variety of facts from which to choose…. Extending this principle to the world at large, my plan would be to classify children in infancy according to the subtle indications afforded by their gestures and reactions to various stimuli…. His lessons should be a relief; the satisfaction of a real appetite. (1989, p. 854)

In the fourth century AD, the Council of Nicea, working for the Roman Empire, set about adapting Christianity into a suitable religion of the state. Its purpose, in retrospect at least, was to take an emerging new paradigm (brought by some guy called Jeshua bar Josephus, later “Jesus H. Christ”—let's call it “the Kingdom within” paradigm), to reshape and redirect it in such a way that it would cease to be a thorn in the side of the ruling elite at that time. Even more than merely neutralizing it, in fact, this brilliant new paradigm called “Christianity” was co-opted as a means to extend the power and influence of Rome, further afield than could ever have happened otherwise. It was a brilliant bit of religious engineering, and as a result the rule of Rome continues to this day, both physically and psychologically, concealed within the Catholic Church and the whole of Christianity. “The Empire never ended.”

In 2010, after reading Norman O. Brown's Life Against Death, I threw together a bunch of notes to try to sum up Brown's insights. Brown's work reinterprets certain of Freud's ideas and places them in a larger, more metaphysical context. I have some reservations about drawing on Freud's psychological models at all, partially because of Freud's dismissal of child sexual abuse as harmless.1 On the other hand, I consider Freud's work to be invaluable (however out of fashion), and no one is without their blind spots (a fact that this present exploration is about). There is compelling evidence (see Sigmund Freud's Christian Unconscious by Paul C. Vitz) that Freud was himself a victim of sexual interference as a child (that he was seduced by his nanny).
