Editor’s Note

Alan Shreck Emmaus Road Publishing ePub

While The Legacy of Pope John Paul II may be appreciated by a wide audience of people who loved our late Holy Father—at the time of this first printing Blessed John Paul II—we have included extra material at the end of each chapter to help facilitate personal and group reflection on the important teachings presented in his encyclical letters. These may be used in adult faith formation classes or for the ongoing formation of catechists so that they may better understand the teachings of the Church. Also, by having all the encyclical letters collected in one book, we hope the readers may not only come away with greater insight into each teaching, but also see them as a unified body of truths, each one hinging upon the other.

For the fullest benefit from these reflections, after reading Dr. Schreck’s summary and commentary on each encyclical, consider reading the entire encyclical on your own. All the papal documents are made freely available online at www.vatican.va (as well as the Catechism of the Catholic Church), or in book format through Catholic bookstores. And for the really dedicated “student,” there are suggestions for further reading. Additionally, while the encyclicals are listed in chronological order, it is advisable to group them thematically when you study them (e.g., those covering social issues, or those relating to the Trinity). What may raise questions in one topical letter may be answered in another.

8 Redemptoris Missio “The Mission of the Redeemer”

Alan Shreck Emmaus Road Publishing ePub
Popes are the Church’s chief shepherds. While some focused on governing the Church and addressing challenges from the world, others recognized their primary responsibility to proclaim and teach the Gospel. Author Alan Schreck calls these the “teaching popes” and John Paul II was such a pope, leading the Church and impacting the world with his witness and his teaching. The encyclical letter has been, in modern times, the instrument for popes to express their most important teaching—teachings that have lasting value for the Church, and often for the whole world. Dr. Schreck invites the reader to become familiar with the encyclical letters of Pope John Paul II. In The Legacy of Pope John Paul II, Dr. Schreck breaks down more scholarly writing into accessible language. The reflection questions and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter help facilitate a systematic study of the central teachings of this brilliant but pastoral pope, who conveyed the truth in love.- See more at: http://www.emmausroad.org/The-Legacy-of-Pope-John-Paul-II-The-Central-Teaching-of-His-14-Encyclical-...
