A Poem Written While Walking in the Fresh Air and Rain at Vester Cove, Donaghadee

Yon yellow kelp will not go home tonight: not fish-and-chips, be loved, believe, be warm, but flapflap on the repetitious storm, and mindless in the dying of the light.

I walk round Vester Cove. The rain persists, and day in dying. Cows slurp in their shit.

The sand is waved unwilling. Rockgobs spit.

And nothing cares it’s here. The fat kelp twists and turns like … nothing. Only in my brain do rocks and waves and seaweed, sludge and sand look fair, and feel, and mean, and understand, and cows want beds, and shelter from the rain.

When I outwalk this bay nothing will care.

But I will not forget. If Humankind should leave tomorrow, Nature wouldn’t mind.

We see us in It: we are not there.

How did we end up here? Making pets of plants and mountains? We and they don’t know.

I come, I look, I think, I write, I go: and that’s as fellow-feely as it gets.

Home and warm, I think about the kelp, still flapping, wet and cold and dark and blind.
