My great-aunt Carlie (from Carlton, her family name) despite Parkinson’s and widow’s weeds lived to be one hundred and four years of age. Born in 1876, the Centennial year, she passed away in 1980, living alone in the Danvers Home for the Aged and Infirm having survived two husbands

As she aged her mind refused to focus on the here and now. She kept a startling vision of her father’s sad decline from wealth to trade: a turn-of-the-century decision to back kerosene, not gasoline.
