The Biology of Belief: What You Believe Can Make a Difference— Whether You Believe It or Not

Man’s mind, once stretched around a new idea, never returns to its original shape.

—OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES

In Chapter 4 we noted that the power of our beliefs can change our environment so profoundly that it alters how our genes actually produce proteins and, therefore, create positive and negative effects on every cell in our body. Now we need to look at the effects beliefs can have on two levels of health:

1. The surface or tangible effects of beliefs; that is, how beliefs affect our actions.

2. The subsurface or intangible effects of beliefs, or effects of energy and thoughts, on matter, specifically our DNA.

In Chapter 4 we defined the tangible effects of beliefs with the equation:

Genes + Environment = Positive or negative health and aging + longevity

Our environment is composed of or affected by three interrelated factors:

1. Our beliefs and emotions   2. Stress   3. Lifestyle habits

The First Secret Revealed: If You Know How to Keep One Cell Healthy, You Can Do It for 100 Trillion of Them

Errors, like straws, upon the surface flow; He who would search for pearls, must dive below.

—JOHN DRYDEN IN ALL FOR LOVE

Take a close look at yourself in the mirror, and compare the way you look with photos from your younger days. If you are like most people, some big differences will be apparent. This is probably one of the reasons that motivated you to purchase this book—to find out about advancements in medicine so you can do something about aging and age-related diseases.

You are probably wondering why these signs of aging are occurring and what you can do about them. To answer this important question, let’s take a closer look at what is actually going on in your body to understand what you see in the mirror. When we understand the controlling factors, we can then take actions to control our aging destiny. For the most important answers, we must go deep within our bodies.

What the most recent advancements in science show is that we must use our most powerful zoom lenses to focus on what’s happening inside our cells to understand how to control the aging process. Only then is it possible to determine what we can do about aging and age-related diseases. The good news is that this is what we have done for the past decade. We have new answers to help you control your health in a way never before possible.

Personal Genetic Health Nutraceutical Supplements: Forget Daily Once-a-Days—21st Century Anti-Aging Nutrition Is Here Now!

If I knew I would live as long as I have, I would have taken better care of myself.

—GEORGE BURNS, COMEDIAN, AT AGE 101

In Chapter 1 we discussed the massive confusion surrounding supplements as well as anti-aging programs. Indeed, confusion reigns, and getting good advice about taking supplements is hard to come by. Millions of people are indoctrinated through the media to take “once-a-days” to stay healthy. But can they help you age optimally? The answer is they really can’t.

NUTRITIONAL BUILDING BLOCKS

We eat to supply the building blocks that make new cells to replace worn out or damaged cells. The carbohydrates we eat supply energy or fuel for our cells, and protein supplies the backbone molecules for hormones, enzymes, and the amino acids that help build DNA. Fats supply basic elements for cell membranes and cell receptors. Along with these macronutrients, we need the micronutrients that come from vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts, enzymes, and cellular repair compounds. The quantity and type of vitamins and minerals we take can increase or decrease our gene activity, thereby increasing or decreasing cell aging. We may need increasing amounts of specific nutrients as we grow older to maintain optimal DNA function and cell repair.

The Third Secret Revealed: It’s Not Just Your Genes— It’s Your Total Environment and Lifestyle that Really Matters

It is by logic that we prove, but it is by intuition that we discover.

—HENRI POINCARÉ

The previous chapters discussed the primarily internal factors that have numerous effects on the expression of your genes. When it comes to your general cellular health, however, additional forces of nature are also at play. We group these additional factors together as environmental factors. In fact, the interaction of these environmental factors with your genes has given rise to a new branch of science called epigenetics. But before we discuss epigenetics, we need to review some background information about the environmental factors, which are typically grouped in two general categories: biotic factors and abiotic factors.

BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC FACTORS

When most people think of the environment, what typically comes to mind are things like rocks, soil, water, plants, animals, and air. While these things do indeed make up the environment, there are additional factors we need to consider. To understand what these factors are, divide them into two groups: the biotic factors deal with living things in the environment, and the abiotic factors deal with nonliving things in the environment. This means that plants and animals are biotic factors that have an effect on us, and we have an effect on them, too. For example, most allergies are triggered by biologic matter in the air we breathe or by animal bites like bee stings. Abiotic factors like temperature, water and air quality, and sunlight also affect all living things. Human behavior also has an effect on them.

Proof We Can Slow Aging Now: Why It Doesn’t Have to Be Like It Was for Your Parents!

So many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health.

—A.J. REB MATERI

Looking young and staying young are part of the twenty-first century lifestyle. That has created two mega industries: the vitamin industry, which has grown to yield more than $30 billion a year, and the anti-aging industry, which produces more than $100 billion a year. Both of these mega-health industries are growing more rapidly as more people are getting older.

But while more and more people continue to use health products, confusion still reigns in both areas. Based on our medical experience, we find that most people are still looking for definitive answers to such health and nutrition related questions as:

• Why do I need to take vitamin supplements if I eat well?

• Can I really extend my health span or life span by eating right, exercising, and taking supplements?

• What should I take, how much should I take, and when should I take these vitamins and other dietary supplements?
