The Full Personal Genetic Health Program: The Gene Makeover Completed

Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.

—ARTHUR SCHOPENHAUER

Let’s summarize the key concepts we have covered so far in this book. To begin, various scientists, including geneticists and anti-aging physicians, have proven they can slow aging and improve the period of optimal health in mammals. Recent studies of chimps, for example, reveal they are 99.9 percent genetically identical to humans. Startling new research in both humans and chimps shows that calorie restriction changes how genes respond and creates a positive environment for aging. We also discussed how the environment, both internal and external, is the essential factor in controlling your genes and your DNA.

We now can measure the group of genes involved in human calorie restriction to determine how efficiently your personal genes are functioning. What we measure is your potential gene activity, which regulates the key cellular health processes of methylation, inflammation, glycation, oxidation, and DNA repair. Once we know what your gene efficiency is—you should know that no one’s is 100 percent—we can recommend specific nutraceutical supplements that will interact with your genes and their related cellular pathways to promote more positive aging and mimic the effect of calorie restriction at the cellular level. In this way, we can nutritionally compensate for the inefficiencies you inherited with your genes. This process is based on the new science of epigenetics, which you can take advantage of by following the PGH Gene Makeover Program.

The Second Secret Revealed: The Last Thing You Want Is a Bad Photocopy of the Most Important Information in Your Life!

When you teach your son, you teach your son’s son.

THE TALMUD

In Chapter 2 we discussed the aging process at the individual cellular level, and why it’s so important to keep our DNA and the genetic information contained within it as healthy as possible. This is especially true for the genes that control the five key processes regulating aging at the cellular level. We stressed that if we can control aging at the individual cellular level, then every one of the 100 trillion cells that make up our body will age more optimally.

But how does this work? It comes down to making better copies of your cells as they naturally wear out and are replaced. The last thing you want is a bad photocopy of the most important information in your life—your DNA.

In this chapter we’ll review what happens normally as we age in a positive fashion, with the focus on the processes of cell replication or cell replacement.

The Biology of Belief: What You Believe Can Make a Difference— Whether You Believe It or Not

Man’s mind, once stretched around a new idea, never returns to its original shape.

—OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES

In Chapter 4 we noted that the power of our beliefs can change our environment so profoundly that it alters how our genes actually produce proteins and, therefore, create positive and negative effects on every cell in our body. Now we need to look at the effects beliefs can have on two levels of health:

1. The surface or tangible effects of beliefs; that is, how beliefs affect our actions.

2. The subsurface or intangible effects of beliefs, or effects of energy and thoughts, on matter, specifically our DNA.

In Chapter 4 we defined the tangible effects of beliefs with the equation:

Genes + Environment = Positive or negative health and aging + longevity

Our environment is composed of or affected by three interrelated factors:

1. Our beliefs and emotions   2. Stress   3. Lifestyle habits

The Third Secret Revealed: It’s Not Just Your Genes— It’s Your Total Environment and Lifestyle that Really Matters

It is by logic that we prove, but it is by intuition that we discover.

—HENRI POINCARÉ

The previous chapters discussed the primarily internal factors that have numerous effects on the expression of your genes. When it comes to your general cellular health, however, additional forces of nature are also at play. We group these additional factors together as environmental factors. In fact, the interaction of these environmental factors with your genes has given rise to a new branch of science called epigenetics. But before we discuss epigenetics, we need to review some background information about the environmental factors, which are typically grouped in two general categories: biotic factors and abiotic factors.

BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC FACTORS

When most people think of the environment, what typically comes to mind are things like rocks, soil, water, plants, animals, and air. While these things do indeed make up the environment, there are additional factors we need to consider. To understand what these factors are, divide them into two groups: the biotic factors deal with living things in the environment, and the abiotic factors deal with nonliving things in the environment. This means that plants and animals are biotic factors that have an effect on us, and we have an effect on them, too. For example, most allergies are triggered by biologic matter in the air we breathe or by animal bites like bee stings. Abiotic factors like temperature, water and air quality, and sunlight also affect all living things. Human behavior also has an effect on them.

Proof We Can Slow Aging Now: Why It Doesn’t Have to Be Like It Was for Your Parents!

So many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health.

—A.J. REB MATERI

Looking young and staying young are part of the twenty-first century lifestyle. That has created two mega industries: the vitamin industry, which has grown to yield more than $30 billion a year, and the anti-aging industry, which produces more than $100 billion a year. Both of these mega-health industries are growing more rapidly as more people are getting older.

But while more and more people continue to use health products, confusion still reigns in both areas. Based on our medical experience, we find that most people are still looking for definitive answers to such health and nutrition related questions as:

• Why do I need to take vitamin supplements if I eat well?

• Can I really extend my health span or life span by eating right, exercising, and taking supplements?

• What should I take, how much should I take, and when should I take these vitamins and other dietary supplements?
