coastal views are limited to either end of these 119 miles. From Calais to Perry, Route 1 follows the St. Croix River estuary as it widens into Passamaquoddy Bay. Then the water abruptly disappears from view, but its nearness is felt in the lobster traps stacked on lawns, the fishing boats on cradles awaiting repairs, the sandy soil, the scruffy pines, and the tantalizing promise of rivers and streams that stretch eastward and disappear around a wooded bend. When the ocean reappears seventy-five miles later in Gouldsboro, it does so spectacularly, affording views of Frenchman Bay and the mountains of Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island.

Glimpses of the ocean are limited between Perry and Gouldsboro, but Coastal Route 1 nevertheless lives up to its name with a look, pace, and culture that is distinctly different from the 213 miles that precede it. When the road reaches Ellsworth, it changes yet again.
