Sashed Squares Quilts

PDF

Sashed Squares Quilts

◆ FINISHED FOUNDATION:

7 3⁄4˝ × 7 3⁄4˝

◆ TIME:

51⁄2

HOURS

Full-size Sashed Squares foundation pattern is on the pullout.

Been There, Done That, 14˝ × 14˝, Terrie Sandelin, quilted by Vickie Bajtelsmit,

2007. Believe it or not, this geometrically bold design that looks so modern actually re-creates the layout and coloring of an 1820s quilt backing!

MARKING THE FOUNDATION

Although the basic construction of the Sashed Squares foundation is the same as the 13-Square foundation, the tiny pieces of this quilt (those yellow sashing squares finish at 1 ⁄4˝) present a unique challenge for marking the foundation.

Because the sashing strips are 1 ⁄4˝ wide, you can use the printed line of the foundation as the seam allowance guide for the patches that precede them. Draw the seam allowance lines only for the seamlines that follow the sashing patches.

Then place a patch on the first square. Notice how the seam allowance fabric of the previous patch completely covers the sashing strip? Those 1 ⁄4˝ sashing widths mean that if you mark a letter in either the sashing strip or the sashing square, the seam allowance fabric of the previous patch will cover the letter. To avoid this, write the letter in the next patch over. Placing it to the left of the drawn seam allowance line is a good reminder that it applies to the previous patch.

It is easy to adjust this pattern to fit a center motif that is smaller in size:

Make the inner framing border wider and/or reduce the number of triangles you finish on the foundation.
