SADOMASOCHISM IS, I think, a central feature of most sexual excitement. My hunch is that the desire to hurt others in retaliation for having been hurt is essential for most people’s sexual excitement all the time but not for all people’s excitement all the time. How was it with Belle?
Sadomasochism colored each of her experiences in the real world and in the private world of her daydreams. She transformed every moment so that such themes were dominant; in doing so, she was forever lifting the mundane up to melodrama. I had plenty of chance to study this in our relationship, since her sadomasochism in its most direct form was aimed at me. And it was of course in the transference that these issues were brought under control.*
Her resistance was overtly shaped more by sadomasochism than by anything else. A moment she experienced as filled with distress—usually humiliation—became an attack aimed at me. Even her loving and tender times contained the sadism. For instance, if she was gratified that I understood, she arranged the words in the sentence so that the message was, “Considering that you are a male and therefore have always been and shall always be hard, obtuse, unempathic, and unable to bear my physical presence (because it is female), you really are empathic, kind, and remarkably patient; I love you because you try so hard to contain your disgust.” And those were the good times.
In this chapter, we're going to create custom editors and views in
plug-ins. Plug-in development is a huge topic by itself, and it can take
dozens of files to create a commercial plug-in. Fortunately, the Eclipse
PDE comes with a number of wizards that will write up the plug-in's code
framework for you, saving significant time. We'll see how to use those
wizards in this chapter, rewriting the code they generate to make the
plug-in do what we want.
The first example in this chapter is going to create a
multi-page editor associated with the file extension we're going to
specify: .xyz. When the user double-clicks a file
with that extension in the Package Explorer, Eclipse will use our editor
to open and edit it. That editor will have two tabs corresponding to its
two pagesthe default tab will display the text contents of the file,
and the Sorted tab will display those contents sorted in alphabetical
order. You can create files with the .xyz extension
using the New File menu
item, but this plug-in example is also going to have a built-in wizard
that will create .xyz files for the user and place
default text in them.
Do you bank locally? When I give talks, I usually ask the audience this question and most hands instantly pop up. (This would not be true for the U.S. population generally, but those who come to learn about localization are naturally predisposed to putting their money in local financial institutions.) I then ask how many have pension funds. Almost every adult pays something into Social Security, but most think only about private pensions, so about half the hands appear. Then I ask how many of their fund managers are investing in locally owned business. Usually, only one or two hands are left up, and I must explain to these well-intentioned souls that, most likely, they are mistaken.
Although place-based businesses in the United States account for 58 percent of the economy, very few investment dollars find their way into LOIS businesses. Even those of us who want to invest in the SmallMart Revolution have no reasonable way to do so. Sure, I could knock on the door of my favorite local entrepreneur and ask if she would be willing to let me put one thousand dollars into her business, and she might be able to figure out some way to restructure her company to accommodate my wishes. But putting our life savings in any one, two, or three LOIS businesses this way requires lots of expensive paperwork by you and the entrepreneur. It’s also not very prudent. The risk that any one business will perform poorly or go belly up is simply too great. Most of us do not invest for a living and are looking for simple, cookiecutter, low-cost, low-risk ways to protect and grow our savings for our kids’ college education or for our retirement. We typically accomplish this by putting our money into diversified funds made up of the stocks and bonds from hundreds or even thousands of individual companies. Millions of Americans now entrust their portfolios to mutual funds. And if you ask them to find you a stock, a bond, or a fund that specializes in local small business, they will look at you as if you’ve just arrived from Mars.119
Stroke is recognized by the sudden onset of neurological signs related directly to the sites of injury in the brain where the morbid process occurs (1). The associated motor dysfunction results from injury to areas of the brain subserving motor function. Although the clinical presentation of stroke is quite variable, about 80% of patients present with hemiparesis due to focal infarction along the pyramidal tract and its accompanying fibers (2) alone, or with cranial nerve, sensory, and extrapyramidal manifestations, owing to involvement of contiguous fiber tract and nuclear groups. Spasticity, stiffness, and hyperreflexia of the affected limbs, which supervene in up to one-half of patients in the paretic limbs, completes the upper motor neuron syndrome in a given patient, making the diagnosis apparent (3). Less commonly, hemiparesis can occur without upper motor neuron signs after a stroke, leading to initial diagnostic uncertainty (4).
There are four
activities that occur naturally in every organizing system; how explicit
they are depend on the scope, the breadth or variety of the resources, and the
scale, the number of resources that the organizing system encompasses.
Consider the routine, everyday task of managing your
wardrobe. When you organize your clothes
closet, you are unlikely to write a formal selection policy that specifies what things go
in the closet. You do not consciously itemize and
prioritize the ways you expect to search for and locate things, and you are unlikely
to consider explicitly the organizing principles that you use to arrange
them. From time to time you will put
things back in order and discard things you no longer wear, but you probably
will not schedule this as a regular activity on your calendar.
