Poet in the Class

Slice PDF February 23, 2015

Poet in the Class

I read the poem about Bobby who climbed the mountain, who reached the peak and jumped, who noticed half-way down the filing-paper wings were far too weak.

I read the poem of the eighth sea, the one they never tell you about.

I read the poem of the shout across the desert heard only by the sandstorms.

I read the poem of the one-legged horse who tried to stand up for himself.

I read the poem of the hard-working elf who poisoned Santa’s tea and said, ‘You never make presents for me.’

Afterwards, I apologised. Really I did.

Better vitamin-children than sherbet-fountain hooligans.

Rhyming-couplet poetry would keep them in their lines.

Poets are cockroaches, they only sound good when you crunch them.

The teacher smiled at this, lukewarm handshake.

She had put me in the second-best chair, the one with the fingernail marks along the varnish:

We have a poet in the class today, come to read some modern poetry, not what we’re used to but I’m sure we’ll cope.

Aren’t we lucky to be here?

Sit still.

4. The Solution

Slice ePub January 09, 2014

In the first chapter I gave you an overview of the skin. In this chapter, I’d like to delve a little more deeply into the science of the skin it relates to bioactive skin care ingredients. Understanding the skin i scientific perspective helps us understand how we can achieve both safe and effective results from cutting-edge technology and nontoxic ingredients.

There is a widespread misconception that if a product is natural, it is not effective—that it’s not strong enough to do the job. Conversely, some people feel that if a product is effective, it can’t be natural—that it’s more of a drug than a natural product. Research demonstrates that not only are many natural and nontoxic ingredients safe, they can also be very effective. In most cases, these ingredients are even more effective than toxic chemicals. Typically, chemical ingredients are chosen merely because they are cheaper than the natural, nontoxic alternatives. The fact is, we don’t need drugs to keep our skin looking and feeling healthy. Nature, when combined with the best science has to offer, can provide us with everything we need.

CHAPTER 1: What is an Allergy?

Slice ePub January 09, 2014

Atextbook definition of allergy has been argued about among doctors and scientists for over a hundred years now. Just during the time that I’ve been a doctor, we have seen the idea of food allergies come out of nowhere to be accepted, although the “old guard” of doctors still like to restrict the term allergy to symptoms like asthma and eczema, and they refer to “food intolerances” rather than food allergies. If you suffer from allergies, you don’t give a hoot what they call it. In this book, I’m going to cover allergies, intolerances, sensitivities, and anything else you like to call them, so the exact medical definitions don’t work. The dictionary definition of allergy is a damaging immune response by the body to a substance, especially pollen, fur, food, or dust, to which it has become hypersensitive. In other words, an allergy is any encounter with something from the environment that gives you symptoms.

How do you know it’s an allergy? Common allergy symptoms may include sneezing, wheezing, itching, bloating, cramps, lack of energy, sleepiness, irritability, trouble concentrating, and headaches. But each of these can be caused by other things than allergies, so an allergy should be suspected when exposure to something in particular gives you the symptoms. For example, you walk through a park and start to sneeze; or you eat eggs or another food and you start to bloat; or you get in a taxi with one of those air fresheners and you get a sore throat or a headache.

36. Shell Programming for the Initiated

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

This chapter has a bunch of tricks and techniques for programming with the Bourne shell. Some of them are documented but hard to find; others aren't documented at all. Here is a summary of this chapter's articles:

The first group of articles is about making a file directly executable with #! on the first line. On many versions of Unix, an executable file can start with a first line like this:

The kernel will start the program named in that line and give it the file to read. Chris Torek's Usenet classic, Section 36.2, explains how
#!
started. Section 36.3 explains that your "shell scripts" may not need a shell at all.

The next bunch of articles are about processes and commands. The exec command, Section 36.5, replaces the shell with another process; it can also be used to change input/output redirection (see below). The : (colon) operator evaluates its arguments and returns a zero status Section 36.6 explains why you should care.

7. Unnecessary Protocols and Services

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Nearly all networked systems and routers have many services automatically activated for the convenience of the administrator. These features, enabled by default, often provide attackers points of entry to gather information or gain access into the router. Since each service provides a possible access point, it is important to turn off all services that are not needed or that are security risks.

The Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) enhances network functionality and is invaluable for testing network connectivity and determining network paths. No one troubleshooting a network problem would want to be without the ability to ping and traceroute. ICMP also provides incredible functionality that an attacker can manipulate to collect vast amounts of information about your routers, your network topology, and the systems on your network.

It is extremely difficult to keep a determined attacker from discovering information about any system attached to the Internet. However, the recommendations that follow will make that job harder and keep casual attackers from finding your network attractive.
