CHAPTER TWO: Boundaries and confidentiality in supervision

Slice ePub May 24, 2014

Heather Wood

Introduction

There are wide variations in supervisory practice in the establishment and maintenance of boundaries. At the beginning of the encounter, one supervisor will receive a supervisee in silence and will wait for the supervisee to begin the work of the meeting; another will commence by asking the supervisee how they are; a third will offer coffee and social pleasantries. Each of these supervisors may have a rationale, based in psychoanalytic theory, for behaving in the way that they do. Different aspects of psychoanalytic theory can be used to justify a range of actions. Supervisors, therefore, face choices about the boundaries that they establish to protect and frame the supervisory relationship.

The boundaries of the supervision relationship relate to the formal arrangements between supervisor and supervisee. There is considerable variation in the way that even the practical aspects of this arrangement are managed—the regularity of supervision, flexibility over fees, the setting of the supervision, and the response to cancellations. The subject of boundaries also encompasses more qualitative issues: the boundary between therapy and supervision, between a social relationship and supervision, and between a teaching relationship and supervision. The literature on supervision reveals markedly differing views about where these boundaries should be drawn.

In Defence of Obeah

In Defence of Obeah

If there shall be found in the possession of any slave any poisonous drugs, pounded glass, parrots’ beaks, or other materials notoriously used in the practice of Obeah or witchcraft, such slave upon conviction, shall be liable to suffer transportation from the island.

Obeah Law, 1816

was not just cat bones, parrot beaks, the teeth of alligators some would pat our pockets in search of; was not just poison brewed with shells; was not just a way towards hell; was not just a lock-up of shadows in bottles knowing man will surely dead if his most basic shape is no longer cast on ground; was not just a duppy gather-round; was not just a sundown of candles, the wicks only so long as the life of Massa; was not just the slow backward recital of verses; was not just belly knotting curses; it was all of that, but also it was an anti-drowning and it was all of that, but also it was an anti-breaking and it was all of that, but also it was a knowledge and it was all of that and all of that and it was

D. Specifying Color

Slice ePub May 28, 2014

This appendix contains background information regarding specifying color that applies to both CSS properties and HTML attributes.

There are two methods for specifying colors in web documents: numeric RGB values and color names.

The most common and precise way to specify a color is by its numeric RGB (red, green, blue) values. Using RGB values, you can specify any color from the "true color" space (millions of colors). For an explanation of RGB color, see Chapter 28.

Using an image editing tool such as Adobe Photoshop, you can determine the RGB values (on a scale from 0 to 255) for a selected color. These are the RGB values for a particularly lovely spring green:

Color values are most often provided in a two-digit hexadecimal (base-16) form, not decimal, although these values may be used as-is in one CSS color format. Hexadecimal numbering is discussed in more detail in the next section. The same RGB values for that spring green look like this when converted to hexadecimal:

8 VIRTUAL MEETING MAGIC

Slice ePub May 14, 2014

Over the next few days I attended two of Iris’ virtual meetings, and just as she’d said, they were awful. In our follow-up phone call I reviewed my notes with her:

Meeting 1:  Regional Sales Managers’ Weekly Teleconference

Notes: Iris led a somewhat dry teleconference that was designed to summarize key initiatives for the week. She was the primary speaker for 90 percent of the meeting, and when she asked questions, there was usually a long silence before anyone responded. Most of the conversation from other participants came from 3 of her 12 regional managers. Other team members seemed bored and distant, as if they were doing email.

Meeting 2:  Brainstorming Teleconference with Marketing

Notes: Iris attended a brainstorming session led by Tasha Williams from marketing. Iris gave her input on a variety of ideas, and the meeting was lively but unproductive. Unfortunately, the group was unable to come to a conclusion on a specific theme for an important new campaign. They agreed to hold another teleconference in a few weeks.

12 Georgetown

Every Maine beach has cold water, but Reid State Park has a reputation for being the coldest of all. We’re talking all-over-ice-cream-headache type freezing. But that doesn’t stop the crowds. This is one of the premier beaches on the Gulf of Maine and, like Popham, one of the rare stretches of fine sand in the midcoast. Which means it’s one of the most popular places to be in the entire state on a sunny summer day. If it weren’t for Reid, most visitors to Maine wouldn’t have a clue where Georgetown is.

It’s easy to understand the appeal. Reid is a beach-lover’s beach—and the last big beach before the rocks take over. The sand here is soft and warm and stretches for more than a mile and a half between the Little River and Todd’s Head. There are real breakers for bodysurfing—boogie boards, however, are not allowed. Plus, there’s a shallow lagoon with its own beach where the water is probably twenty degrees warmer.
