1. Dreamweaver CS5 Guided Tour

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Dreamweaver CS5 is a powerful program for designing and building websites. If you're brand-new to Dreamweaver, turn to What Dreamweaver Is All About to get a quick look at what this program can do and what's new in this latest version. This chapter provides a basic overview of the different windows, toolbars, and menus you'll use every time you build a web page. You'll also learn to set up the program so you can begin building web pages. And, because doing is often a better way to learn than just reading, you'll get a step-by-step tour of web page designthe Dreamweaver wayin the tutorial at the end of this chapter.

Dreamweaver CS5's interface shares the look and feel of other programs in the Adobe "Creative Suite," like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash. Out-of-the-box, Dreamweaver organizes its various windows as a unified whole (see Figure1-1). That is, the edges of all the different windows touch; resizing one window affects the others around it. This type of interface is common on Windows computers, but Mac fans accustomed to independent floating windows might find this look strange. Give it a chance. As you'll soon see, this design has some benefits. (But, if you just can't stand this locked-in-place style, you can detach the various panels and then place them wherever you'd like on the screen; see Organizing Your Workspace for directions.)

11. Project Communication

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

The speed of the project is proportional to the speed at which information moves between people's heads.

Alistair Cockburn

The End of Software Engineering

This chapter discusses how communication can be improved within a project by using a range of different tools, including web pages.

Imagine if all builds took no time at all and we all wrote perfect code. Then the limiting factor in how long software takes to write would probably be how well the people in a project communicated ideas with each other. Even back in the real world, where we all have to wait for our builds and where bugs somehow spontaneously appear in our code, poor communication in a project still wastes enormous amounts of everyone's time. Many cases of poor communication are for complicated and emotional reasons, and when a group of people don't want to communicate with each other about something, no mere tool can make it happen. However, providing a group with different communication tools can encourage them to communicate better.

17. C API

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

This chapter covers the C API provided by MySQL. The first part provides a basic tutorial on how to connect to MySQL and how to query MySQL with C and the C API. Following the tutorial is an alphabetical listing of MySQL functions in the C API with explanations and, in most cases, examples. At the end of this chapter is a listing of special data types for the C API. For the examples in this chapter, I have used a database for a fictitious computer support business. The database contains one table with client work requests (
workreq
) and another with client contact information (
clients
).

This section presents the basic tasks you need to use the C API.

When writing a C program to interact with MySQL, you first need to prepare variables that will store data necessary for a MySQL connection and query results, and then you need to establish a connection to MySQL. To do this easily, you need to include a couple of C header files (as shown in the code example): stdio.h for basic C functions and variables, and mysql.h for special MySQL functions and definitions. These two files come with C and MySQL, respectively; you shouldnt have to download them from the Web if both were installed properly:

LA RENAISSANCE DES ARTS ET METIERS

Source: William Morris
Slice ePub May 27, 2014
