8. Restore Your Energy with Herbal Tonics

Slice ePub May 22, 2014

Herbs can be remarkably beneficial for alleviating fatigue, CFIDS, and fibromyalgia. In this chapter, you’ll discover how a special class of herbs called tonics can help to rebuild your energy reserves, enhance your immunity, and improve your overall well-being. When combined with a health-building diet, appropriate exercise, and sufficient rest, tonic herbs play an essential role in helping you to feel your best.

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Life

From the beginning of time, people have sought substances from the plant kingdom to restore health, prolong life, and enhance energy. In the ancient traditions of Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, tonics are esteemed as the highest form of herbal healing. Ayurvedic practitioners prescribe tonics for the renewal of body and mind, with the goal of enhancing spiritual awareness and delight in living. Similarly, Chinese herbalists prescribe tonics to strengthen resilience, improve organ function and metabolism, and to further the development of what the Chinese call “radiant health.”

12. Performance

Slice ePub May 29, 2014

Discussing web application performance is complicated. There are many different aspects to performance, not the least of which is the users perception: does the end user think the application is slow or fast? If she thinks its fast, she doesnt care (though you may) that your servers are being pounded to death. On the other hand, a user with a slow Internet connection is likely to perceive your application as slow, even if your servers are running nicely. Of course, you dont have any control over the users Internet connection or, for that matter, over her perceptions. Nevertheless, you usually want to make sure your application is as responsive as the most popular sites on the Internet that have a similar amount of content. Of course this is a very general goal and has more to do with what users are likely to expect than what your application may have to go through to generate its content.

For example, you may have an application that does some very complex reporting against a large set of data. Dynamically generating these reports may take a significant amount of time. Your users, on the other hand, expect that you should have solved this problem somehow and would like to see most pages returned in about the same time as it takes to render static HTML.

CHAPTER TWO: Neuroscience and intrinsic psychodynamics: current knowledge and potential for therapy

Slice ePub May 24, 2014

Colwyn Trevarthen

I am going to talk mainly about new ideas we have gained in the last few years concerning how communication with infants works, with particular reference to its timing—the rhythms and narrative melodies that we have been able to reveal by musical analysis.

Two or three years ago I had the great fortune to be offered collaboration by Stephen Malloch, a young Australian musical acoustics expert who was completing a PhD in Music and Physics at the University of Edinburgh. Stephen had developed computer analysis of the sounds of musical instruments to explore how a composer had crafted them to create a beautiful piece of music. He is a violin teacher and has studied conducting. As a practising musician he has a sensitive ear for the collaboration required between players, and he has discovered a latent talent for science too. Now he is working in a first rate acoustics laboratory in Sydney, where they are focusing attention on the infant’s perception of emotion in speech, and on the nature of musical expression, combining this with the analysis of gestures of dance. The idea of looking at both the choreography and the music of communication together is turning out to be very helpful in unravelling how infant and mother can coordinate their expressions so precisely, and with such ease. We find that a young baby may be expressing itself more with delicate hand movements than with its voice. So we have to pay attention to the baby’s dance while the mother is speaking or singing.
