Abstract—Metabolic networks formed by long sequences of biochemical reactions have been widely investigated to determine the catalytic role of genomes and how they interfere in the process. Many tumors have been reported to be the result of a pathology in the cell’s pathway. Knowing that the complexity of the imbrication of such networks is beyond human reasoning, the use of artificial intelligence to help scientists in their experiments might seem adapted. This paper aims to present a logical model for metabolic pathways capable of describing both positive and negative reactions (activations and inhibitions) based on a fragment of first order logic. We also present an efficient automated deduction method allowing us to predict results by deduction and infer reactions and proteins states by abductive reasoning.

Yogurt and Structures, Organs, and Systems

The possible health benefits of yogurt for various structures, organs, and systems of the body are underinvestigated. Results from relatively few studies indicate that this unchartered area is worthy of further explorations.


Bone resorption is the loss of minerals, especially calcium, from the bone. Yogurt may enhance bone health by strengthening it, and by retarding bone loss. Frequently, postmenopausal women have bone resorption, followed by bone fragility, fractures, breakages, and falls.

Can the consumption of yogurt, a high-calcium food, help reverse bone resorption? Robert P. Heaney, M.D., and his team from the Osteoporosis Research Center at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, attempted to answer that question. They enrolled twenty-nine postmenopausal women with habitually low calcium intakes, who showed signs of bone resorption. The women were not on estrogen therapy, which helps bone absorb calcium, nor did they use calcium supplements. In the study, three servings of yogurt were substituted for a nutritionally poor snack that the women had been consuming in their daily diet. Within seven to ten days, the study showed that bone resorption can be reduced rapidly with improved calcium intake. Also, the satiety effect of the yogurt substantially improved the overall quality of the diet. These changes were achieved readily in older women merely by daily yogurt consumption.

Generating XML Schemas and Strongly

Typed DataSets with XSD.exe

The .NET Framework SDK includes a tool named XSD.exe that can be used to speed up development when going from XML to code and from code to XML. The tool can automatically generate XML Schema Definition (XSD) files from XML or from classes and can also be used to generate strongly typed DataSets.

XSD is a W3C recommendation that defines a format for specifying the structure, semantics, and content of an XML file.

We’ll look at how to use XSD.exe to accomplish both of these tasks in this article.
