1. The Risks of Excess Weight

Slice ePub May 23, 2014

CHAPTER 1

According to a 2003 editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association, obesity has become pandemic in the United States. Today, two in three adults are classified as being either overweight or obese compared with fewer than one in four adults in the early 1960s. An astounding 61 percent of adult Americans are estimated to be either overweight or obese. This means that well over 100 million people in this country have crossed the threshold of increased risks for various health conditions.

Carrying excess weight is considered to be the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States. It increases the risks for all of the following:

Believe it or not, this list still leaves out many conditions for which excess weight in creases the risks. Merely being overweight by age forty cuts three years off of ones life; being obese cuts between 5.8 and 7.1 years from life expectancy.

Ideal Weight The weight range, depending on height and frame size, at which basic health is best and the risks of disease and death are lowest.

3. Kod HTML responsywnych stron

Slice ePub March 02, 2015

Chapter Two - Learning to Walk Down the Corridor: Body Image, Catastrophic Anxieties, and Supportive Internal Figures

Slice ePub May 22, 2014

CHAPTER TWO

Learning to walk down the corridor: body image, catastrophic anxieties, and supportive internal figures

Maria Rhode

In this chapter, I discuss factors that seemed relevant to the important developmental achievement of two children who learned to walk down the corridor between waiting room and therapy room without needing to rely on the crutch of a toy from home. This would appear to be a straightforward task as long as motor development has reached the necessary level. However, as I shall outline, emotional factors have an important part to play in bodily integration; and many people, even adults who function well in other areas of their lives, can find it hard to sustain a continuing, internally based sense of identity when they move from one setting to another. For example, Giovacchini (1965) has documented the use to which the sensations generated by extreme anxiety may be put in order to reassure the patient that they continue to exist. One of his patients so arranged her car journey to her analytic session as to be precisely on time, neither a second too early nor a second too late. Achieving this meticulous degree of accuracy necessarily entailed considerable anxiety each time. Giovacchini suggested that the bodily manifestations of this anxiety—muscular tension, a pounding heart—provided confirmation on a fundamental level of her “going on being”. Without this, the transit between the safe, identity-confirming spaces of home and consulting room could have felt like a “nowhere place” that offered no support to her sense of identity.
