17. Settings

Slice ePub November 24, 2014

The Settings app is like the Control Panel in Windows or System Preferences on the Mac. It’s a tweaking center that affects every aspect of the iPad: the screen, ringtones, email, Web connection, and so on.

In this book, you can read about the iPad’s preference settings in the appropriate spots—wherever they’re relevant. And the Control Center, of course, is designed to eliminate trips into Settings.

But so you’ll have it all in one place, here’s an item-by-item walkthrough of the Settings app and its structure in iOS 8.

The Settings app starts as a master list of panels—left side; tap the Settings category (Notifications or General, let’s say) to view the corresponding options on the right portion of the screen.

Even then, you may find that you’re not done “drilling down.” You may have to tap, for example, General, then Keyboard, then Shortcuts, burrowing deeper into that right-side pane each time. It’s a lot of navigation.

ELEVEN

PRESENTER: The patient is an eight-year-old girl. She draws a great deal in the sessions. In the one I am reporting, she drew a house with a girl looking out of the window. There was a road passing the house and two people standing there playing instruments. They were playing some music that she had learnt at school, about a boy singing a song to his girl-friend.

BION: HOW does she bring in this music? Does she sing it?

P:  No, she explains it.

B:  A sort of running commentary on the drawing?

P:  Yes. I said, “You are telling me about things you like, such as having a boy-friend, but also something you don’t like that you cannot keep.” She erased the girl and the two boys, and then drew a girl sitting in a hammock slung between two trees, and the sun drawn with the face of a person.

B:  What about the expression on the face of the sun?

P:  It had no special expression. She erased the drawing again and drew small fishes in the sea and a fishing boat. Then a big arch at the bottom of the sea. She said the arch was full of hidden treasure; a thief had stolen it, had run away from the police, and had thrown it into the sea. I said she was afraid of the hidden things inside her, and afraid that I would not understand. She drew a shell and a necklace inside the arch, and a man swimming close to the arch; I asked her about the swimmer; she said he wouldn’t find the arch because he was swimming with his head turned the other way. I said she was afraid that these hidden things might not please me and then I would not like her any more. Then she rubbed out the swimmer and re-drew him facing in the direction of the arch.

Chapter 4: The Focused Instruction Plan

Slice ePub September 07, 2014

If we elect to teach a standards-based curriculum, differentiation simply suggests ways in which we can make that curriculum work best for varied learners. In other words, differentiation can show us how to teach the same standard to a range of learners by employing a variety of teaching and learning modes.

Directions: Reflect upon what you currently know about each teaching strategy shown below and how you currently use it.

How do you know which teaching strategies to use in a focused instruction lesson, and how will you know if your lesson was successful? If you forget everything else that you read in this book, please remember this: Teachers are the most important influence on student learning! Teachers who are effective enhance learning to a much greater level than do those who are less effective with their teaching skills (Eggen & Kauchak, 2001). Let’s explore some specific teaching strategies that utilize focused instruction. They are:

Negrita

Slice ePub June 18, 2014

RICHARD STERLING

Negrita

It’s more than just paint on a Saigon wall.

More than half a century ago, sometime in the 1950s, a small triangle of vacant land lay at the confluence of Tran Hung Dao and Nguyen Cu Trinh Streets. Its address today is 148 Tran Hung Dao, on the way west to Cho Lon. Sometime back in those olden days, it might even have been in the waning days of French rule, a billboard size advertisement was painted on the eastern wall of the adjacent building. The ad was for Negrita Rum, a very popular tipple here from earliest French days to Reunification in 1975 when it pretty much disappeared. But until that time it was the drink of choice for many Foreign Legion soldiers, their heirs the American G.I.s, and who knows how many hard drinking journalists. The ad features Chinese script, which is appropriate to one’s destination should you see it driving westward down the street.

Negrita Rum (the French spell it “rhum”) was first blended and labeled in 1847 by the Bardinet Company of France. And Bardinet still produces it. It’s the most popular rum in Spain and high on the list in other European countries. It’s a blended rum, being made in distilleries on Reunion, Guadeloupe, and Martinique islands. It’s the Martinique element that gives Negrita its distinctive taste. Rums of Martinique are “agricole” rums. They are made from sugar cane juice, not molasses, a by-product of the refining process.
