4. Graphics

Slice ePub May 29, 2014

With the introduction of the Spark architecture in the Flex 4 SDK, graphics have become first-class citizens and can be sized and positioned within a layout along with the other elements in the containers display list. As in previous versions of the SDK, vector graphics are rendered using the drawing API of a read-only flash.display.Graphics object held on the lowest layer of a Sprite-based element. Yet for Flex 4, the concept has been given an overhaul. Now display objects are created and held internally by GraphicElement-based elements to render graphics, providing a level of abstraction that allows for graphics to be treated the same as any other visual element within a layout.

Along with this new graphical rendering concept, Flex 4 incorporates the Flash XML Graphics (referred to as FXG) format, which is a readable vector graphics format that is interchangeable between multiple software tools and does not require knowledge of the ActionScript language or MXML markup.

Northwest New Mexico

Slice ePub May 25, 2014

The extreme northwestern part of New Mexico at first appears to be nothing more than sandstone and scrub grass, mostly flat terrain, dry, rocky, and hot. Closer inspection reveals multi-colored rock formations sprouting from desert-like flats, gnarled juniper and pinyon trees, few people, and thousands of acres of rugged, undisturbed nature. The region encompasses part of the vast Navajo Reservation, which will be covered as a single entity in a later chapter. Part of this corner of the state is not Navajo land, but includes a rich mix of cultural influences; this is the region we are concerned with here. Modern and ancient Hispanic cultures are strong forces in this region and, although it is not strictly Navajo Indian land, many Navajo people and other Indians do continue to live here. The New Mexico state tourism office has dubbed the area "Indian Country." It includes reservation lands belonging to Zuni, Acoma, Laguna, and Ramah Navajo tribes. All share a land that has revealed incredible archaeological treasures and continues to add the seasoning of ancient history to a fine mix of sometimes subtle natural beauty and adventurous opportunities.

15. Being unemployed

Chapter Fifteen

Being unemployed

This chapter looks at:

Unemployment statistics

Being unemployed literally means not having a job. If you are facing unemployment for whatever reason, you are not alone. Sadly, it does seem that young people are twice as likely to be unemployed as those in older age groups in the labour market.

There is a link to qualifications here. Surveys in the past have found that someone with no qualifications is 1.8 times more likely to be unemployed than someone with GCSEs (grades A*C) and 4.6 times more likely to be unemployed than someone with A levels. For this reason alone it is best to stay on in FE if you possibly can.

Jobcentre Plus

If you are looking for work, you will be familiar with your local Jobcentre Plus office. When you first visit one of these offices you will meet a personal adviser who will need to take some personal details and will probably want you to prove your identity, so it is worth taking some documents with you, such as your passport. You will be told about the vacancies that suit you and arrangements will be made for you to be sent the relevant claim forms for any benefits that you are entitled to (see below).

24. Stimulation of the Anal Erotogenic Zone as a Precipitating Factor in Paranoia (1911)

Slice ePub May 22, 2014

Contribution to the problem of homosexuality and paranoia

THE analysis of Schreber’s autobiography2 and the investigation of paranoiac patients3 established the decisive role of homosexuality, generally warded off with the aid of projection, in the pathogenesis of this psychosis. Since then I have had the opportunity of observing a number of paranoiacs, and in every case without exception I have had no alternative but to interpret the symptoms as the consequences of a destroyed social sublimation of homosexuality. They were all to be regarded as individuals whose development from auto-eroticism to object-love had suffered disturbance, and who had thereupon, as a consequence of narcissistic fixation and subsequent accidental causes, regressed to the homosexual level, but had warded off this perversion, which was intolerable to their consciousness.

Let me now describe one of these cases.

A Suabian peasant4 aged about forty-five, who had always lived a sober life, was brought to me because of his persecution mania. His wife explained to mc that he had the fixed idea that every man who approached him was an enemy, wanted to poison him, pointed at him, wanted to ridicule him. If a cock crowed in the yard or a stranger passed him in the street, it all happened because of him.

Chapter 3: Five Types of Prototypes

Source: Prototyping
Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Before beginning this book, I knew there would be a number of different types of prototypesanyone with a measurable amount of prototyping under his or her belt knows that. While I cannot say that I discovered a new type of prototype or purpose for prototypes, I can say that discussions with other practitioners led me to a new way of thinking about prototyping.

During my frequent discussions with practitioners and vendors, the usual suspects for types of prototypes surfaced repeatedlyfor example, they are a way of communicating a concept or idea, a way to sell your idea internally, a way to market your idea to customers, and a way to determine whats feasible.

However, it was a discussion with user experience designer Jed Wood that brought out one of those ah-hah moments. Jed shone some light on something that had been sitting there all alongprototyping as a way to work through your own designs.

Like I said, it wasnt as if I had suddenly discovered a new type of prototype. In fact, it was during our conversation that I realized I had been doing this all along. I just never thought of it this way until my discussion with Jed. As a practitioner, this is probably the most valuable reason to prototype.
