9. Legacies

APT

H

C

T

E

NIN

R

E

Legacies

he word legacy by definition denotes something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor from the past.

It is derived from the middle English and middle French word, legate. A legate is an official emissary. It is akin to the word legend which is a story or body of stories coming down from the past. Not part of the word form, but definitely part of a legacy are monuments defined as evidence of someone notable, the placement of a stone or a building erected in remembrance of a person. The legacies of

Bill Priest represent all three definitions. His legacy, in many ways, bequeathed to future generations all that he contributed to the development of community colleges. He mentored, gave opportunities to, and otherwise helped to develop a number of educational emissaries. Finally, in tribute to all that he did, several

“monuments” carry his name.

Many of the elements of higher education that Priest transmitted to current students began in California: the associate degree in nursing, televised courses, and non credit courses; but these were honed and expanded during his tenure in Dallas. 4. Event Streams

Source: Perl and XML
Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Now that youre all warmed up with parsers and have enough knowledge to make you slightly dangerous, well analyze one of the two important styles of XML processing: event streams. Well look at some examples that show the basic theory of stream processing and graduate with a full treatment of the standard Simple API for XML (SAX).

In the world of computer science, a stream is a sequence of data chunks to be processed. A file, for example, is a sequence of characters (one or more bytes each, depending on the encoding). A program using this data can open a filehandle to the file, creating a character stream, and it can choose to read in data in chunks of whatever size it chooses. Streams can be dynamically generated too, whether from another program, received over a network, or typed in by a user. A stream is an abstraction, making the source of the data irrelevant for the purpose of processing.

To summarize, here are a streams important qualities:

It consists of a sequence of data fragments.

CHAPTER ONE. They decide to set up a practice—the office

Slice ePub May 22, 2014

He’s done it. Gilles has completed his training. He has written and defended his final dissertation—about a case of infertility of psychological origin. His trainers have supervised him during several “practicum” exercises—during which he has worked with other students, counselling them over some of their issues in everyday life. They have emphasized his strong points (a lot of intuition and an excellent sense of human contact, inducing a sense of trust) and his shortcomings (he has a tendency to want to try to explain everything too thoroughly, to justify each of his moves, and he also has a tendency to be overprotective); they have helped him find his own personal style—which he is going to try to develop deliberately. They have given him their go-ahead so he can take on his first clients, provided he is regularly supervised.

The first thing Gilles does is therefore to look for a supervisor, before taking on anyone as a psychotherapist. He already has in mind several of his patients, whose frequent illnesses appear to be in great part soma-tizations. Because he was initially trained as a physician, he prefers individual supervision sessions, during which he will be able to manage his time freely and share his first hesitations and possible mistakes, without feeling ashamed, in the discretion of a private session. He does not wish to risk being publicly criticized, being used to the privileged status of a doctor “who knows so much” and whom people should trust “blindly”. He is really looking forward to getting started and has not given any thought to his office, figuring he will simply consult in his usual medical office, his consulting table and control equipment already being in a separate room nearby. He is not really fully aware yet of all of the inconveniences of such a mixed use of his current office space.

12.7 Easing the Burden of Implementing a Continuous Integration Process with CI Factory

Slice PDF May 29, 2014

12.7

12.7 Easing the Burden of Implementing a Continuous Integration Process with CI Factory

Continuously integrating a product’s code base is a practice that can dramatically increase its stability. Martin Fowler’s seminal article (http://www.martinfowler.com/ articles/continuousIntegration.html) has convinced many people of the benefits of continuous integration, but turning the words into actions can be difficult. You have to cobble together a build server and write the build scripts, and you’ll have to repeat this process for every project with which you want to practice continuous integration.

For an experienced CI master, it may take a couple of days to get a project under CI; for an inexperienced person, it may take a week or more. This delay can cause some people to decide it’s not worth the effort.

CI Factory was created to mitigate these time requirements, and was born out of a desire to quit writing unique build scripts for every new project.
