Chapter Eleven - The Greatest Love of all

Karnac Books ePub

The greatest love of all

Gabriela Goldstein

“The Poet makes himself a seer by a long, gigantic and rational derangement of all the senses. All forms of love, suffering, and madness. He searches himself. He exhausts all poisons in himself and keeps only their quintessences. Unspeakable torture where he needs all his faith, all his superhuman strength, where he becomes among all men the great patient, the great criminal, the one accursed-and the supreme Scholar!—Because he reaches the unknown! Since he cultivated his soul, rich already, more than any man! He reaches the unknown, and when, bewildered, he ends by losing the intelligence of his visions, he has seen them. Let him die as he leaps through unheard of and unnamable things”

(Rimbaud to Paul Demeny, 15 May 1871)

The relation between Eros and art is a long story involving love and pleasure. Experiences with art provide pleasure because they unfold an erotic dimension that is extended in time and different from the sexual in its aim, in that it adds sublime pleasure. Art as an encounter with the beautiful is a promise of pleasure, a “promise of happiness”, as Stendhal (1822) would say. However, this promise, a promise of love, is held within a symbolic frame. Its objects—expropriated from the subjectivity that has constructed them—are cultural objects, and yet they may provoke deep emotions that reach the unthinkable. This is the role of Eros, the Eros that is love and pleasure and displays the complexity of desire.

APPENDIX 2: Coaching fundamentals

Bill Goodyear Karnac Books ePub

There are four NLP principles behind all this work, which are very helpful, and which you need to keep in your mind whilst using all the coaching tips. This is the basic operating manual for coaching.

•  Well formed outcome

•  Rapport

•  Behavioural flexibility

•  Sensory acuity

Also worth putting into the mix are two helpful models for intervention which also arise out of NLP: the TOTE model and the BasicIntervention model, and a helpful tool for change called LogicalLevels.

Well formed outcome

The very best coaching question to ask is “What do you want?” There is always an answer, though sometimes it will be a soft answer (I want to feel satisfied) and other times it will be harder (I want to have enough money).

Of course you can play with time frames: What do you want right now? What do you want to have done by the time you are an old man on your deathbed? What do you want to change in the next year? You can also chunk up (What do you want that for? What sort of life will that give you? What's good about that?), and chunk down (Exactly what will that be like? When? Exactly how much money is enough?).
