vi is the classic screen-editing program for Unix. A number of enhanced versions exist, including nvi, vim, vile, and elvis. On Mac OS X Tiger, the vi command is linked to vim. The Emacs editor, covered in Chapter 8, has several vi modes that allow you to use the same commands covered in this chapter.
The vi editor operates in two modes, command mode and insert mode. The dual mode makes vi an attractive editor for users who separate text entry from editing. For users who edit as they type, Emacs modeless editing can be more comfortable.

A sticky wicket is an allusion to an element of cricket and, never having played this British pastime, I’ll make my disclaimers for understanding the game fully. A wicket is a gate-like set of sticks with cross-pieces at which a ball is bowled. Wicket also refers to the turf between the wickets and, by extension, the condition of that turf. If the turf is waterlogged or muddy (not unusual for England), the ball behaves unpredictably and it is difficult to succeed...such turf is otherwise known as a sticky wicket.See All Chapters

For standards-based reform to work in science teaching and learning, teacher professional development needs to be sustainable, comprehensive, collaborative, and inquiry based. If possible, it should be embedded into the instructional day. It also needs to include a review of science concepts, particularly in the area of STEM, as well as methods to guide and assess student learning. Furthermore, it needs to address teachers’ fears and concerns about finding time to teach science and about their knowledge of the subject matter.
A main goal of professional development in science education is to strengthen teachers’ ability to design and teach effective, hands-on, inquiry-based lessons and create assessments that are authentic and multilayered. Since many teachers have never been exposed to scientific inquiry experiences, having them participate as learners in inquiry-based science provides them with the opportunity to understand learning from this perspective. In addition, the experience provides them with the opportunity to analyze their feelings as learners, discuss challenges from a teacher’s perspective, and increase their subject-matter knowledge. Why should we even consider using open source standards? This is a question that usually comes up when a company first begins embarking along the open source path, and its one of the most valid to ask before starting integrations.
Lets look at some of the benefits and drawbacks of open standards to help implementers decide if it is the correct approach for them.
The benefits are numerous, but well focus on just a few main points. Usually, open source initiatives that have any measure of success in the community have support from some major company. These companies often contribute heavily to the specifications and have a genuine business reason for doing so. In other words, these companies (e.g., Yahoo, Facebook, Google) are driving the future of the specification to fill some specific business need.
