Motherhood

Slice PDF February 23, 2015

Motherhood

Suppose I emptied my flat of everything, everything but my books? The elephants would have to go. They’d be the first to go

– being the youngest – and the last, the plants perhaps, relics of early motherhood.

I’d keep the piano, all my files and photos.

I’d keep my grandmother’s chest to keep my photos in, in and not on top of, everything swept absolutely clear of motherhood.

Nothing shall move: no herd of elephants proceed down my mantelpiece, spider-plants produce babies, carpets moths, moths shall go into the ether where all bad spells go.

I’m sick of the good. Of drooling over photos that lie, lie, lie, breaking my back over plants for whom – Oh! for whom? Not everything

I thought green greened. Not even elephants consoled me for the bane of motherhood.

Therefore motherhood must go. Motherhood must go as quietly as prisoners go and all her things go with her, elephants troop behind her, tapestries drown her, photos –

OK photos can stay but everything dust-collecting goes the way of the plants.

9. Going Beyond Gzipping

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Besides proper configuration of HTTP caching headers, enabling gzip compression is typically the most important technique for speeding up your web page. A chapter was devoted to compression in Steve Souders first book, High Performance Web Sites. Now that all browsers support gzip and all responsible web developers have enabled gzipping, that chapter is closed, right? Not quite.

Even if you have enabled gzipping, there is a good chance that a small but significant portion of visitors to your site are not receiving compressed responses. The exact percentage varies greatly across different demographics and geographies, but a large web site in the United States should expect that roughly 15% of visitors dont indicate gzip compression support. This chapter explains why the percentage is higher than expected, how that affects performance, and what developers can do about it.

With such a small percentage, you might ask, Whats the big deal? Lets take a look at what happens to 10 popular web sites when gzipping is disabled.

CHAPTER THREE: Relationship climates

Slice ePub May 22, 2014

“See how the golden groves around me smile,_
That shun the coast of Britain's stormy isle,
Or, when transplanted and preserved with care,
Curse the cold clime and starve in northern air.
Here kindly warmth their mounting juice ferments
To nobler tastes and more exalted scents”

(Addison, 1704)

Iam interested in the emotional tone of supervision, what the chemistry might be between people with different emotional styles in order to achieve an enabling supervisory environment. I describe these simply as warmth or coolness, though more complex analyses are available and discussed briefly below. I am curious about how the matches between the supervisor's and supervisee's styles make different supervision relationships work, and use ideas from Myers-Briggs and attachment theory to think about the issues.

A supervisory alliance may be built from, and work within, a comfort zone of shared style, or function as a bridge between different styles. Bonding with someone similar may initially seem easier, but bridging could be more productive in the end. Bridging skills include immediacy so either can make comments to check out the intentions or meaning of the other, and a curious interest in difference. I make my personal preference for warmth explicit, and I hope that does not wholly distort this discussion, as I am interested in all the variations of relationship, and, in particular, in the opportunities which arise from differences in professional style and theoretical modality, class, race, age, sexuality, and so on. Here, I focus on emotional temperature, but this intertwines with cultural norms and differences and the developmental stage of the supervisee. I am also conscious that differences can, unhelpfully, lead to abuse of power by either party.
