CHAPTER SEVEN: FINDING COMMON GROUND: NEGOTIATING AND RESOLVING CONFLICTS

Slice ePub May 15, 2014

Never inflame the will of your opponent.

MAHATMA GANDHI

USER’S GUIDE The processes described in this chapter are flexible. You may find some of the steps here unnecessary in the situation you’re in, or you might need to apply them in some creative new combination of your own.

The tips here are addressed to you as an individual, but if you’re part of a team, it’s important that your whole team agree to try them, too. It’s hard to create trust with an opponent if others on your team think the only way to deal with differences is to fight until they “win.” Use what’s in this chapter to bring members of your team along. Let them see the power of this approach through your own example.

FINDING COMMON ground with other people does not mean finding absolute agreement. Common ground is shareable ground whose boundaries are marked by a range of actions that all can live with. You and your neighbor may not vote for the same political candidate, for example, but your shared belief in elections, free speech, and the democratic process is common ground.

APPENDIX B. The Gender Identity Development Unit at the Portman Clinic, London

Slice ePub May 22, 2014

The Gender Identity Development Unit at the Portman Clinic, London

The Gender Identity Development Unit, at the Portman Clinic, provides a national specialist service within the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. The Trust is a national and international mental health training centre, providing training, clinical services, research, and organizational consultancy. The Unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary group of professionals, with contributions from child and adolescent psychiatry, psychotherapy, clinical psychology, social work, and paediatric endocrinology. It offers integrated, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary assessment and therapeutic programmes to children and adolescents up to the age of 18 years with gender identity problems and intersex disorders. It also offers counselling to children and families where a parent presents with a gender identity disorder, and it provides expert advice to the courts.

The Gender Identity Development Clinic was founded by Dr Domenico Di Ceglie in 1989 in the Department of Child Psychiatry at St George’s Hospital in London, following a regular workshop on gender identity problems that had been held at the Croydon Child and Family Psychiatric Clinic from 1986 until the St George’s clinic opened. The service transferred to the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust in January 1996. The number of referrals has continually increased since the formation of the service, and to date the service has seen about 150 children and adolescents.

4. Configuring a Multiserver Farm

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

In Chapter3, we went through the steps to install Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 onto a single server. In this chapter, we are going to broaden this basic installation out to numerous servers to create a multiserver farm. When we discuss multiserver farms, we are really addressing the subjects of availability and scalability. These topics are often discussed together and they mean numerous things. They can mean having a fast-responding environment (Multiple Web Front Ends [WFE] handling user requests) or it can mean having a redundant environment to provide increased uptime. In either case, we are looking at moving from a single server implementation to a multiple server environment. This chapter details the trade-offs, decisions, and processes in creating a multiserver MOSS implementation.

One of the challenges in scaling out a MOSS site is deciding which services need their own server(s). In this chapter, we will specifically look at Search, Index, Excel Services, and Shared Services. There are valid reasons why we place Excel Services on its own dedicated server or servers if it is being heavily used. Excel Services is a huge resource hog. Similarly, Index, Query, and Search are often best installed on their own server(s) for performance reasons. We want to isolate all of these services if possible, and using a multiserver farm allows for this type of architecture.

A Run on Stockings

Slice ePub July 17, 2014

The moans and groans coming from the Philadelphia hotel room alarmed other guests passing by in the hallway. But by the time the manager appeared and opened the door, the sounds had ceased. Wallace Carothers, the man whose invention was the very embodiment of DuPonts famous slogan Better Things for Better Living . . . Through Chemistry, lay sprawled on the floor, dead.

One of the most popular attractions at the 1939 New York Worlds Fair was the DuPont exhibit. There, steel balls came crashing down onto sheets of glass laminated with polyvinyl- butyryl, a brand-new plastic. Miraculously, the glass did not shatter. This was obviously the perfect material for automobile windshields. Then there was Princess Plastic, a synthetic lady dressed from heel to hat in materials created in the DuPont laboratories. But for many a gentleman, the greatest attraction was Miss Chemistry, a shapely young lady who reclined on a couch with her skirt hitched high to demonstrate DuPonts newest invention. Ladies also flocked to this exhibit, drawn not by Miss Chemistrys legs, but by what those legs were sporting. They were absolutely amazed by the newfangled stockings, which seemed as sheer as silk but were made of a fiber stronger than steel. A fiber that according to the companys advertising was made of coal, air, and water. This was the triumphant debut of nylon.

    Mali

Mali

223 / pop 14.5 million

Like an exquisite sandcastle formed in a harsh desert landscape, Mali is blessed by an extraordinary amount of beauty, wonders, talents and knowledge.

Yet for now, it’s landscapes, monuments, mosques and music bars are off-limits, sealed from tourists by a conflict that is threatening the culture of this remarkable country.

The beating heart of Mali is Bamako, where Ngoni and Kora musicians play to crowds of dancing Malians from all ethnicities, while in the Dogon country, villages still cling to the cliffs as they did in ancient times.

Further west, Fula women strap silver jewellery to their ears and their belongings to donkeys, forming caravans worthy of beauty pageants as they make their way across the hamada (dry, dusty scrubland).

And in the northeast, the writings of ancient African civilizations remain locked in the beautiful libraries of Timbuktu.

» Dogon Country Rose-coloured villages, big blue skies, sacred crocodiles and sandstone cliffs
