12. Server-Side JavaScript

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

The previous chapters have covered the core JavaScript language in detail, and were about to start PartII of the book, which explains how JavaScript is embedded in web browsers and covers the sprawling client-side JavaScript API. JavaScript is the programming language of the Web, and most JavaScript code is written for web browsers. But JavaScript is a fast and capable general-purpose language, and there is no reason that JavaScript cannot be used for other programming tasks. So before we transition to client-side JavaScript, well take a quick look at two other JavaScript embeddings. Rhino is a Java-based JavaScript interpreter that gives JavaScript programs access to the entire Java API. Rhino is covered in Scripting Java with Rhino. Node is a version of Googles V8 JavaScript interpreter with low-level bindings for the POSIX (Unix) APIfiles, processes, streams, sockets, and so onand a particular emphasis on asynchronous I/O, networking, and HTTP. Node is covered in Asynchronous I/O with Node.

The use of the percolation approach in the description of human intellectual activity can be practically useful for solving problems of the creation of effective models of artificial neural networks, as well as for the development of sensitive methods for diagnostics of neural networks of the brain in autism and hyperactivity, and for the development of information security systems.

B. Dreamweaver 8, Menu by Menu

Slice ePub May 29, 2014

Dreamweaver 8: The Missing Manual is quite complete; in its pages, you'll find descriptions of every major Dreamweaver function (and most minor ones). In the interests of completeness, however, here's a quick reference to every command in every menuand the answer to the occasional "What does that mean?" mystery.

The commands in the File menu control the open Dreamweaver document as a whole. They also include basic file functions like saving and quitting:

New. Opens the New Document window, which lets you select a new, blank document of many different types, from basic HTML pages to dynamic pages like ASP or PHP. This window also lets you access templates you've created for your site.

Open. Opens the standard Open File dialog box so you can choose an existing Dreamweaver document to open. You can set the Show pop-up menu to show only specific types of documentsonly HTML or style sheets, for example. The Preview button displays a thumbnail image of the document, if one's available.

Open Recent. Displays a submenu that lists the 10 most recently opened documents. Selecting a document from the list opens it. The last option in this menu, "Reopen Documents on Startup," is kind of cool. If you quit Dreamweaver when any documents are still open (and this option is checked), those documents will automatically reopen the next time you start up Dreamweaver.

18. Mail & Contacts

Slice ePub December 23, 2014

Email is a fast, cheap, convenient communication medium. In fact, these days, anyone who doesn’t have an email address is considered some kind of freak.

If you do have an email address or two, you’ll be happy to discover that OS X includes Mail, a program that lets you get and send email messages without having to wade through a lot of spam (junk mail). Mail is a surprisingly complete program, filled with shortcuts and surprises around every turn.

Mail can’t get your mail unless it knows the details of your email account. The first time you open Mail, then, it asks you for your account information. It’s kind of hoping you use a common email service like Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, or Microsoft Exchange (Figure 18-1), or a common Internet provider like Verizon or Comcast. In those situations, all you have to do is type your email name and password. If Mail recognizes the suffix (for example, @gmail.com), then Mail does the heavy lifting for you. Mail is ready to go online.

18. Theory and Therapy

Slice ePub May 23, 2014

IT was stated in chapter I that the ultimate purpose of theoretical enquiry was to further the aims of psychotherapy. We seek to understand human nature so that we may solve the serious and dangerous problems of human maladjustment in personal relationships. The opinion is frequently voiced that in our time the failure to solve these problems might well lead to the extinction of this phase of civilization, if not of the human race: for at present all peaceful and constructive uses of scientific knowledge are overshadowed by its use to increase our capacity for mutual destruction. Can scientific knowledge about the human mind be saved from the fate of being put to destructive uses? Hate-ridden and destructively motivated dictators, and rulers with paranoid and psychopathic personality trends, could make use (and perhaps have already made use) of scientific knowledge of the weak spots in human personality to further their ends of power-politics. I have expressed the view elsewhere that ‘psycho-analysis as a purely scientific technique of investigation ? …may discover facts about the way the human mind develops from infancy onwards, that could be used for the shaping of psychological conditioning techniques of diabolical efficiency. The mobilization of childhood guilt in political prisoners to “soften them up” before trial, is a case in point.’ (1956b, p. 165.)
