16. Webpluck

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

The promises of smart little web agents that run around the web and grab things of interest have gone unfulfilled. Like me, you probably have a handful of web pages that you check on a regular basis, and if you had the time, youd check many more.

Listed below are a few of the bookmarks that I check on a regular basis. Each of these pages has content that changes every day, and it is, of course, the content of these pages that I am interested innot their layout, nor the advertising that appears on the pages.

These pages are great sources of information. My problem is that I dont have time to check each one every day to see what is there or if the page has been updated. What I want is my own personal newspaper built from the sources listed above.

This is not an original idea, but after spending many hours searching for a tool to do what I wanted, I gave up. Here are the contenders I considered, and why they didnt do quite what I wanted.

6. The Need for Parallelism in HTTP

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

The image on Figure6-1 is part of a waterfall diagram showing the HTTP requests that an IE8 browser performed to download the graphics on the home page of an e-commerce website.

The site name and URLs are blurred to conceal the sites identity. It would be unfair to single out one site by name as an example of poor performance when, as well see later, so many others suffer the same problem.

Figure6-1.Stair-step waterfall pattern

The stair-step pattern seen in this waterfall sample shows several noteworthy things:

The client used six concurrent, persistent connections per server hostname, a typical (http://www.browserscope.org/?category=network) configuration among modern desktop browsers.

On each of these connections, the browser issued HTTP requests serially: it waited for a response to each request before sending the next request.

All the requests in this sequence were independent of each other; the image URLs were specified in a CSS file loaded earlier in the waterfall. Thus, significantly, it would be valid for a client to download all these images in parallel.

3. Preparedness

PREPAREDNESS
Where the potential impact of a hazard cannot be mitigated, a local government must prepare plans for responding to the inevitable. The scope of Comprehensive Emergency Management Planning is huge. Given the resource constraints of a small community, it may take a great deal of time to assemble such prior to it being complete. This chapter will take a unique approach to assembling an all-inclusive plan which starts with certain priority aspects, allowing them to be put in place first, and then followed by subsequent layers of evolving detail being added as these become complete.

EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED
The preparedness phase of Comprehensive Emergency Management is the activity most people associate with “emergency planning.” As we now know, preparedness is just one phase of four which address all aspects of an emergency anticipated by a local government, each of which contribute significantly to a particular aspect of avoiding, preparing for, addressing or recovering from the emergency.See more
