1 Derry Railway Station

Slice PDF May 13, 2015

Six Origami Poems

1

Derry Railway Station

Fold the gentle Foyle beside this end, thus, where the train breathes at a slight curve.

To make the white fence, press the line upon the middle crease in a fine rain.

Then unfold the sheeted roof wing by wing in line with dim bridges and the rounded wall.

2 Elvarethilion

Begin by folding lengthwise and separating amongst bright enamels. To make the unearthly shine, fold the top point – which will be the blade – into a garnet beast, and double back the silver pommel into the dotted fist. Align the creases as if a rainbow were a staircase upon which folded feet boldly tread.

3 a leaping gnu

If you desire a larger gnu, you will need the shimmer from a lake amidst grassland. But a hill will do.

Divide the top half into three hearts: cow, horse and goat. Take point X upon the hoof and fold the top edge, thus, upon its grunt, so it is roughly equal to the distance from the far sun that pours beneath the black clouds to the brown, dusty horizon. This will be an unnatural lime green. To make the water, turn the world over, and crease.

Chapter 8: Strengthening the Home-School Bond

Slice ePub September 11, 2014

In spite of the difficulties that family-school partnerships may entail, working together is critically important for students.

—Anne T. Henderson, Carl L. Marburger,
and Theodora Oams (1989)

The positive impact of parental involvement on the achievement motivation of students was documented in research performed by the National Committee for Citizens in Education in 1975. Anne Henderson reached the same conclusions in her 1987 book titled The Evidence Continues to Grow: Parent Involvement Improves Student Achievement.

More recently, in a 1997 national study on parental involvement commissioned by the National Center for Education Statistics, it was found that children do better in school when their parents (especially their fathers) are involved with their schools—whether their fathers live with them or not (Nord, 1997). The study looked at four types of school activities for parental involvement: attending a general school meeting; attending a regularly scheduled parent-teacher conference; attending a school or class event, and volunteering at the school. The study controlled four other factors that have been traditionally associated with a child’s school success—race, ethnicity, parent’s education, and family income—and found that:

8 Apply the Law of Three

Slice ePub May 15, 2014

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
THEODORE ROOSEVELT

Three core tasks that you perform contain most of the value that you contribute to your business or organization. Your ability to accurately identify these three key tasks and then to focus on them most of the time is essential for you to perform at your best. Let me tell you a true story.

Three months after her first full-day coaching session with me in San Diego, Cynthia stood up and told the group a story. She said, “When I came here ninety days ago, you claimed that you would show me how to double my income and double my time off within twelve months. This sounded completely unrealistic, but I was willing to give it a try.

“On the first day, you asked me to write down a list of everything that I did over the course of a week or a month. I came up with seventeen tasks that I was responsible for. My problem was that I was completely overwhelmed with work. I was working ten to twelve hours per day, six days per week, and not spending enough time with my husband and my two young children. But I didn’t see any way out.

14. Living and Working with Drivers

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.

MARLENE VOS SAVANT

Driver. Even if you knew nothing about Social Styles, the word itself conjures strong images. Focus. Forcefulness. Certainty. Direction. Movement. Intensity.

Marilyn Smith is a long-time practitioner and teacher of Social Styles. As a senior facilitator and consultant in Wilson Learnings Extended Enterprise, she has been in countless business situations where she has taught or applied these concepts and tools and seen the payoff firsthand. She says the most dramatic impact she has experienced with Social Styles, however, is personal. With a Driver.

My biggest success with Social Styles was in my relationship with my son, beginning when he was a teenager. He was a Driver, and I felt as if we were constantly at odds with one another. Our conversations were contentious and usually ended up with him coldly and loudly pushing back from our relationship, and me in tears, pleading emotionally for a little understanding.
