With less than half an hour to get ready for my appointment with Charles, I focused on the three questions Joseph had given me that morning: What assumptions am I making? How else might I think about this? and What is the other person thinking, feeling, and wanting?

Then my secretary buzzed, announcing Charles’s arrival. In the past, I would have kept him waiting. Today, I immediately got up and met him at the door. We shook hands, and I asked him how he was doing. He replied that he was fine but he looked a little nervous. At least I wasn’t the only one. When I originally made the appointment with him, I’d been all set for a showdown. But that was before my meetings with Joseph. Since then, my perspective on the problems between us had changed considerably. I offered him a comfortable chair and asked if he’d like coffee or anything to drink. That must have surprised him because I’d never done that in the past. He thanked me but said he was fine, holding up a small bottle of water he’d brought along.

8 The Consumer-Provider Pair

The argument in this book has been to demonstrate the presence of perverse dynamics within organisations and corporations. These dynamics are not simply the result of the presence of perverse individuals, that is, corrupt leaders who would despoil the organisation out of individual greed, pride or envy. There may well be such individuals, although the picture of such localised evil accounts for but a minuscule element of the phenomena described. The dynamics here refer to broader systemic perversity.

The role of a final chapter is normally to help the reader find a positive and hopeful way out from the difficult and rather depressing scenes that have been revealed. For, should not Eros triumph over Thanatos and should not scholarship work towards creative outcomes? The chapter should then address such questions as: How might our corporations become less perverse? How might the more creative and life sustaining forces of organisational life be supported? Moreover, the book has not addressed those impulses within companies and other organisations that reflect appropriate pride, generosity, gratitude and creative endeavour despite the fact that many such instances can be found. But, this was not my intent and there are a plethora of books that provoke the reader to become more creative, work collaboratively and make it more enjoyable, and that demonstrate the positive capacities of success and corporate responsibility.1 I am intent on exploring perversity within organisations: to know its form and shape before grasping at any quick solution or method of reparation for unintentional ills. There is always attraction in destructivity and its place within and alongside the life forces, if only the attraction of the hope that we might get a better grip on knowing its nature and understanding its insidious grasp; its jouissance as the Lacanians would say.

The early years in the life of Walt Disney and the start of his studio are the subject of a high degree of myth and misunderstanding, much of it perpetuated by Walt himself. Late twentieth century folk wisdom on the subject maintains that Walt was not only not an artist, but also that he possessed no artistic ability himself and merely took credit for the artistry of his studio employees. One biography of Walt paints the picture of a man who was mentally ill in more ways than one (obsessive compulsive, megalomaniac, and paedophile are just a few of the accusations levelled104), while others prefer to paint an image of a kindly, loveable, albeit somewhat complex man, again at the expense of a balanced picture.105 But who was Walt Disney, how much was he involved in the output of the studio which bears his name, and what influence over Disney films did he have and does he continue to have? What was and is Walt Disney’s place in American popular culture, and how was that place achieved? While these questions and others will be addressed in the next few chapters, the roots of the answers will be discussed here in Chapter two. Walt Disney’s childhood, youth, and early professional years will be analysed in light of vast amounts of both information and misinformation which abound on the subject, and the founding of the Disney studio will be examined in conjunction with the biographical elements of this chapter since, in many ways, the story of Walt Disney’s life during the 1920s and 1930s is very much the story of the early years of the Disney studio.

In human life, the Creative works to activate, to engender, to inspire. It raises our energy level and expands and extends our capacities. This energy is bright and sharp, often impatient with the requirements or details of a process. In fact, when we or the atmosphere around us are charged with this pure, yang energy, there may be a sense almost of invulnerability, even God-likeness. For this reason, there may well be a considerable degree of resistance to the limits imposed by human life and the conditions of the world. The process of transformation may have its roots in the Creative, but unless our awareness also undergoes an expansion the net result of such a time could be no more than the after-glow of a beautiful fireworks display.

The construction of the hexagram consists of the trigram Ch'ien repeated in both upper and lower positions. Both nuclear trigrams are also Ch'ien. This construction represents the timeless, undivided, unconditioned force of creativity. As such, it is not any thing, and is unable to become some thing without being received, modified, and given form. At that point time enters the picture as the medium, the dimension through which creativity and transformation occur. The Creative is continuous; it does not have a resting state. It is a dynamic constant, the energy of which finds expression in the innumerable finite forms that have arisen since the universe came into being. Thus, it permeates, activates, and is identical with every living thing, every process, every experience. The Creative, seamlessly and dynamically embracing and embraced by the Receptive (see K'un, below), each carrying the seed of the other within, constitutes Life, eternal and unopposed.

Unless you, as the team leader, discuss how you and others on your team will be held accountable for meeting team expectations, previous efforts are all for naught. True accountability is both individual and shared; individual contributions lead to team success. True accountability involves taking ownership of your own work and recognizing that your work efforts also affect others. In today’s fast-paced business environment, it is important to know how your contributions fit into the big picture.
