4. A Lightning SQL Tutorial

SQL is the language that you use to manipulate relational data. Other languages for data manipulation do exist, but SQL is the most common, and it's the reason for the "SQL" in "SQL*Plus." Because everything you do in SQL*Plus will involve SQL, it's worth digressing for a chapter to focus on learning the rudiments of the language.

As manifested in Oracle, the SQL language encompasses several categories of statements: statements that work with data, other statements that define and modify the structures (such as tables and indexes) that hold data, and still other statements that control the operation of the database itself.

This chapter focuses on statements used to manipulate data:

Places new records, or rows, into a database table.

Retrieves previously inserted rows from a database table.

Modifies data in a table.

Deletes data from a table.

Brings a table up to date by modifying or inserting rows, as appropriate

The reason I focus on data manipulation in this chapter is that if you're just starting out with SQL, data manipulation is likely to be your first problem. You'll likely be working with tables and other database objects that have been created. Furthermore, data manipulation statements are the ones you'll need to leverage the SQL*Plus reporting capabilities I describe in the next few chapters. Other topics, such as creating database structures (e.g., tables and indexes) and controlling the operation of the database, are database administration topics that rightfully belong in other books.

more than one table. Use the FIRST keyword to limit inserts to only the first matching WHEN clause.

The previous INSERT statement illustrated a conditional multitable insert. Use an unconditional multitable insert to perform each INTO clause you specify. For example:


INTO courses_taken (course_name) values (course_name)

INTO students_registered (student_name) values (student_name)

SELECT course_name, student_name

FROM enrollment;

Note that regardless of whether you perform an unconditional or a conditional multitable insert, the target tables for each INTO clause do not need to be the same.

Updating Data

Use the UPDATE statement to modify column values in existing table rows.

Simple Updates

A simple UPDATE statement takes the following form:

UPDATE table_name

SET column_name = new_value, column_name = new_value, column_name = new_value,


WHERE selection_criteria;

For example, the following statement corrects a small problem with a course name; it changes the name to use an “I”

(letter) instead of a “1” (digit):

The regular expression language used by XSLT 2.0, XPath 2.0, and XQuery 1.0 is a superset of the XML Schema regular expression language. Regular expressions are used in the XSLT 2.0 [2.0] <xsl:analyze-string> element and the XPath 2.0 and XQuery 1.0 functions [2.0] matches(), [2.0] replace(), and [2.0] tokenize().

This appendix defines the syntax and capabilities of regular expressions in XSLT 2.0, XPath 2.0, and XQuery 1.0. The details of regular expressions are defined in XQuery 1.0 and XPath 2.0 Functions and Operators section 7.6, String Functions that Use Pattern Matching.

[XPath] The Functions and Operators spec extends the XML Schema regular expression in several ways. Features unique to the XPath 2.0 and XQuery 1.0 regular expression language are indicated with the text [XPath].

The simplest regular expression is just a string of text. The regular expression abc matches the string abc. Were merely searching for a series of characters inside some data. For this case, contains('abc', 'abc') does the same thing.
