Antwerp • Bruges • Brussels • Ghent

The largest metropolis in Belgium is Antwerp, which is situated in the province of Flanders (of which it is the capital). Blessed with a rich history, the city of Antwerp had its first origins as a Gallo-Roman settlement, dating to approximately the 3rd century. It was later settled by the Franks (4th century), and saw Spanish rule in the 17th century. Today, the city of Antwerp is both financially and culturally prosperous. The city is also known for the impressive merchant houses of the 16th century, a large number of which managed to survive both fire and World War II bombings.

The Het Steen (a medieval fortress) stands proud in the midst of the city, providing a fitting location for the popular Museum of Archaeology, and St James Church is known for being the final resting place of the 17th-century artist Rubens.

Founded in 1810, the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen (Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts) is home to a collection of sculptures, paintings, and drawings dating from the 14th to the 20th centuries. Although now temporarily closed for renovation (until 2017) the collection can still be seen at various locations around Antwerp and Belgium. The collection itself is a prime example of art from Belgium and the Northern and Southern Netherlands from the 15th century. Throughout the renovation, the collection will be on display at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, the Municipal Museum in Lier, and Schepenhuis in Mechelen.

11 Preparing for the Exam

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

“Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more that you hate me, the more you will learn.”

Senior Drill Instructor to U.S. Marine boot camp attendees,
in Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam film, Full Metal Jacket

The 11th chapter of this book is concerned with topics that you need to know in order to prepare for the ISTQB Advanced Level Test Analyst exam. The chapter starts with a discussion of the ISTQB Advanced Level Test Analyst learning objectives, which are the basis of the exams.

Chapter 11 of this book has two sections:

1. Learning objectives

2. ISTQB Advanced exams

If you are not interested in taking the ISTQB Advanced Level Test Analyst exam, this chapter might not be pertinent for you.

Each of the Advanced syllabus exams is based on learning objectives. A learning objective states what you should be able to do prior to taking an Advanced exam. Each Advanced exam has its own set of learning objectives. I listed the learning objectives for the Advanced Test Analyst exam at the beginning of each section in each chapter.

36. Failures

Outright failures can often be detected easily; when a router fails completely, there are usually some pretty obvious symptoms. When a WAN Interface Card (WIC) starts mangling packets, the problem can be a little harder to diagnose. In this chapter, I'll cover some examples of what can cause failures, and discuss how to troubleshoot them effectively.

Human error can be one of the hardest problems to track, and, once discovered, may be almost impossible to prove. Getting people to own up to mistakes they've made can be a troublesome taskespecially if the person responsible is you!

Once, I was working on a global network, administering changes to the access lists that allowed or denied SNMP traffic to the routers themselves. We'd just added a new network management server, and we needed to add its address to all the routers so they could be monitored and managed from the central office.

Instead of properly writing the configurations ahead of time, testing them in a lab, and then deploying the proven changes during a change-control window, I decided that because I was so smart, I would apply the changes on the fly. The changes were minusculejust one linewhat could go wrong?

Chapter 3 The RISC Approach to Schooling

Slice ePub September 24, 2014

Leading Questions

1. Is there room for innovation in your school or district?

2. Does your school or district have organizational goals? Do you know what they are?

3. As an educator in your system, is there accountability for what you do?

4. What are your thoughts about the knowledge and skills students should master before they are granted a high school diploma? What should a confident, prepared high school graduate know and be able to do?

5. What does it look like in your system when a student masters these skills and this knowledge early?

6. Are teachers in the system using standards in their day-to-day instruction? If so, how are they using them?

7. Does instruction flow from standards, or is instruction based solely on textbooks?

8. Are students keeping track of their own progress on standards?

9. Does your assessment and grading system accurately reflect students’ relative strengths and weaknesses?

The RISC Approach to Schooling is an integrated standards-based system of education that represents a synthesis of research and best practice about high-performing organizations, educational excellence, the characteristics of effective schools, and fundamentals of human learning, engagement, and motivation. It is fair to say that this model is the first organized, sustainable attempt to use a systems approach to empower students to have a say in what they learn and how they learn—both independently and with teacher guidance and direction—and, as a result, take achievement to new levels.

XXVI The Decalogue of Pope John XXIII

Slice ePub June 16, 2015

1) Only for today I will seek to live the entire day positively, without wishing to solve the problems of my life all at once.

2) Only for today I will take the greatest care of my appearance: I will dress modestly; I will not raise my voice; I will be courteous in my behavior; I will not criticize anyone; I will not claim to improve or to discipline anyone except myself.

3) Only for today I will be happy in the certainty that I was created to be happy, not only in the next world but also in this one.

4) Only for today I will adapt to circumstances without requiring all circumstances to be adapted to my own wishes.

5) Only for today I will devote ten minutes of my time to some good reading, remembering that just as food is necessary to the life of the body, so good reading is necessary to the life of the soul.

6) Only for today I will do one good deed and not tell anyone about it.

7) Only for today I will do at least one thing I do not like doing; and if my feelings are hurt, I will make sure that no one notices.
