8. Artistry off the Rails (1947)

Artistry off the Rails

As 1947 dawned, Stan Kenton had achieved just about everything he had set out to accomplish in music. Stan had every reason to be satisfied, but below the surface problems were accumulating. For six years almost without a break, Kenton had driven himself at a pace that would have exhausted most men within a month, and for the first time in his life he was feeling tired. The constant travelling, lack of sleep, snatched meals, and ever-present cigarettes were having their effect. Once they reached a hotel the guys could often relax before that night’s performance, but for

Kenton it meant another round of radio shows, intensive interviews, personal appearances. Everyone wanted a piece of Stan Kenton.

On top of that, Violet was giving him grief. They had planned the orchestra together, but for Violet the dream had turned sour, for the simple reason the couple had no home life together. Stan was constantly on the road, and even the short periods he was able to sleep over, his mind was as much on music as marriage. Violet had become a grass widow, and their daughter Leslie can hardly have known who her father was. Now Violet was hassling Stan that if their marriage was to last, somehow he had to spend more time with her, and that demand was incompatible with leading a road band. Kenton was truly between a rock and a hard place.

10. Asterisk Manager Interface (AMI) and Adhearsion

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Do but take care to express yourself in a plain, easy Manner, in well-chosen, significant and decent Terms, and to give a harmonious and pleasing Turn to your Periods: study to explain your Thoughts, and set them in the truest Light, labouring as much as possible, not to leave them dark nor intricate, but clear and intelligible.

The Asterisk Manager Interface (AMI) is a powerful programmatic interface. It allows external programs to both control and monitor an Asterisk system.[125] This interface is often used to integrate Asterisk with existing business processes and systems, CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software. It can also be used for a wide variety of applications, such as automated dialers and click-to-call systems.

The Asterisk Manager Interface listens for connections on a network port. A client program can then connect to the Asterisk Manager Interface on that port, authenticate itself, and send commands to Asterisk. Asterisk will then respond to the request, as well as update the client program with the status of the system.

Chapter 6. Fingerprinting The Goji Berry: The Special Signature

Slice ePub May 23, 2014

o two people on earth can have identical fingerprints. In fact, the chances of finding a match for even a portion of a fingerprint are estimated at one in one quintillion (thats a one followed by 20 zeros), which explains why partial fingerprints are admitted as forensic evidence. Even identical twins do not share identical fingerprints. They may look similar, but they are easily distinguishable, even to a layman.

At this point, you might ask, What does this have to do with goji berries? Goji berries dont have fingers.

This is true, but each variety does possess unique characteristics that distinguish it from any other type of goji berry. A berry from Ningxia may look and taste identical to one from Xinjiang, but in fact, they can be quite different when viewed through a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer.

Perhaps the best way to think of a spectrometer is to relate it to a prism. A prism takes the white light of the sun and breaks it up into its component colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

Welles Reinstated (1990)

Welles Reinstated (1990)

The week’s major event, of course, is this morning’s one-off (for contractual reasons) screening at the National Film Theatre of

Orson Welles’s The Magnificent Ambersons, painstakingly restored to its original 131-minute length by Kevin Brownlow, using the footage recently discovered in the RKO archives. The new material crucially changes the tone of the last third of the movie, giving it a political dimension and a tragic aspect only hinted at in the version released in 1942.

Brownlow also came across a fragment of the score Welles commissioned from the then unknown Leonard Bernstein, who was in California at the time, convalescing and writing his Clarinet

Sonata. RKO rejected Bernstein’s music out of hand as too avantgarde. Those lucky enough to be at the NFT at noon today (all tickets were snapped up within an hour) will be able to judge for themselves, when Carl Davis conducts his augmented arrangement of the Bernstein fragment as a prelude to the restored Magnificent

6. Preliminary Testing and Accessibility

Slice ePub February 02, 2015

Best developer practices run the gamut from keeping the cruft out of your code to ensuring your code is accessible to all your application or site’s users. In this chapter, I’m focusing on two specific components: prelimary testing and accessibility.

There are various forms of testing, including running tools that highlight bad practices, unit testing, performance testing, as well as testing your applications in a variety of environments.

Regardless of how well the code tests out, if it isn’t accessible to all your audience, then it fails. At the end of the chapter, we’ll look at a couple of approaches you can take to ensure your code is accessible as well as accurate and efficient.

You want to check your code for any gotchas that may not trigger a failure, but also aren’t the best coding practices.

Use a lint tool such as JSHint to highlight potential problems or less than optimal code.

The simplest approach to ensuring your code meets a minimum standard of acceptable coding standards is to use the strict setting at the beginning of your code or function:
