The key difference between upcycling and reusing waste is that with upcycling the original intention of the object changes. For example, if a painter uses a painted canvas for a new painting, he is reusing the canvas. But if instead that same painter takes the canvas apart, uses the wood to make a frame, and uses the fabric to make a purse—that’s upcycling.
The idea of upcycling isn’t all that new. People have been upcycling for thousands of years. In fact, before the Industrial Revolution (and before processes typically needed for recycling became readily available), reuse and upcycling were common practices. There were no landfills or incinerators to speak of, and the idea of “disposable goods” simply didn’t exist in the way it does today. If your pants wore out, the remaining material could be used as cleaning rags or to make another piece of clothing. If a leg broke off your kitchen table, the wood that originally made the table could be used to make a shelf.See All Chapters

To say, as has often been said, that “John McHugh was a great character” reveals something about what a character is in local rather than literary terms. If one man is considered a character then others are not. In emic terms, “characters” are not the narrative representations of all dramatis personae appearing in folklore; they are types of individuals distinguished most often by uncommon wit, effusiveness, gullibility, volatility, backwardness, or some other marked trait of excellence or eccentricity. True, the deceased at a wake is treated as if a character, in the local sense, through anecdotes seeking to identify the essence of the deceased. Therefore, eventually all are afforded the opportunity of being celebrated for individuality while also being characterized in terms of traits and types. However, those like John McHugh who are consistently referred to as “characters” are treated and portrayed as such usually during life, definitely at their wakes, and indefinitely after death at ceilis and the wakes of others. Simply put, in local terms, characters are those people who offer the most entertaining material for anecdotes and are therefore most often discussed. Having earned a reputation, they attract attention from storytellers who are eager for more material and who are not above using traveling motifs or apocryphal elements when adding to the social biographies of local characters.See All Chapters

The Dutch southeast belies most clichés about the Netherlands: tulips, windmills and dykes are scarce. There is though plenty of beer, which is appropriate given the obvious Belgian and German influences.
Maastricht is a contender for the title of Finest Dutch City, and it even has – drum roll – hills. It’s as different from Amsterdam as it is geographically distant except in one key area: its people are just as irreverent and fun. It’s the true star of its province Limburg and fully embodies the southeastern concept of bourgondisch : eating and drinking with a verve worthy of the epicurean inhabitants of France’s Burgundy.
The other province in the region, Noord Brabant, is a land of agriculture and industry peppered with a few pleasant towns; Den Bosch celebrates its namesake favourite son Hieronymous Bosch with a monument and a fantastic museum that gets to the heart of his idiosyncratic art. Breda is worth a look for its cathedral and small but interesting museums, while the Efteling theme park is the biggest domestic tourist attraction.See All Chapters

Description: After the teacher poses a question, students think about the answer silently. After sufficient thought time, the teacher picks from a group of sticks that represent each student. The chosen student answers the question. Stick selection can continue until a sufficient number of answers are heard.

Festival Jazz is a well-respected jazz festival that's held in the Lugano's Piazza Riforma in the first week of July. Previous lineups have included Buddy Guy, Van Morrison, Yes, Jethro Tull, Yellowjackets, Al Jarreau, Randy Brecker. It's open-air, it's crowded (best not to take small kids) and, incredibly, it's free! There's a great atmosphere in the city at this time.
Porto Ceresio is a quiet, pretty lakeside village, with fine views over the lake to Morcote and along the two arms of the lake. There are three daily boat runs here from Lugano, with twice-daily return trips. Ponte Tresa, favorite supermarket-stop for local Swiss (prices can be up to 40% cheaper) is attractive enough, and is the jumping-off point for trips to Miglieglia and the cable-car to Monte Lema another peak with outstanding views and great walking/biking trails. Boats serve Ponte Tresa, also reachable (a more regular service) on the Ferrovie Luganesi, www.flpsa.ch, a small train that essentially operates as a commuter service for all the workers and school kids commuting to Lugano City.See All Chapters
