North Beach & Chinatown

Coffee or tea? East or west? You’ll never have to decide in San Francisco, where historic Chinese and Italian neighborhoods are linked by poetry-lined Jack Kerouac Alley. 'A Cold Face Lit with Fire': A Madonna by Michelangelo

Slice ePub May 23, 2014

John Fielding

(This paper was first given at a seminar in the ‘Original Themes in Winnicott’ series)

This paper is presumptuous in two respects. First I am not an art historian and have no training in the interpretation of paintings or sculpture. I come to Michelangelo with a no more than ordinary knowledge of his work, his life and times; I have read as extensively as I could in researching and I do not claim any originality for what I write. I was led to Michelangelo in the course of preparing a talk on Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, particularly on the absence of mothers in the play and I saw the art history as illuminating my way to that. Second, I am not trained in any form of psychoanalysis. Professionally I am a teacher of literature and although my practices as a teacher have been transformed by what I have understood and been able to use of Winnicott, I have nothing to offer in terms of insight from analytic practice. My expertise such as it is might best be construed as in the analysis of the texts themselves and what I think I do in this paper is boldly, and you may think rashly, transfer that to the contemplation of a very different art work.

Chapter 1: Tigers Rise to the Top

Source: Auburn Tigers
Slice PDF May 13, 2014

-:L7AO three undefeated seasons during that time. And they had four other seasons in which they lost just once. None of those great seasons resulted in a championship, though.

That is what made 2010 so special for Auburn. Newton won the school’s third Heisman Trophy. And as a team, the Tigers finished with a school-record

14 wins and zero losses. Along the way, the Tigers defeated some of the best teams in the country. This time, nobody was better than Auburn.

Practically nobody saw the season coming. Auburn had lost five games in 2009. Although most expected the

Tigers to be good in 2010, few expected them to be great. Auburn came into the season ranked number 22 in the

Associated Press (AP) Poll. The AP Poll is one of two major polls in college

Tigers proved that ranking was too low.

Auburn won its first three games to move up to number 17 in the rankings.

[7]

Cameron “Cam” Newton played just one season at Auburn. But it was one of the greatest seasons in college football history. Newton spent his first two college seasons at the University of Florida. Then he transferred to Blinn College in Texas.

8. JAX-RS Client API

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

One huge gaping hole in the first version of the JAX-RS specification was the lack of a client API. You could slog through the very difficult-to-use
java.net.URL
set of classes to invoke on remote RESTful services. Or you could use something like Apache HTTP Client, which is not JAX-RS aware, so you would have to do marshalling and unmarshalling of Java objects manually. Finally, you could opt to use one of the proprietary client APIs of one of the many JAX-RS implementations out there. This would, of course, lock you into that vendors implementation. JAX-RS 2.0 fixed this problem by introducing a new HTTP client API.

Before I dive into the Client API, lets look at a simple code example that illustrates the basics of the API:

This example invokes GET and POST requests on a target URL to create and view a
Customer
object that is represented by XML over the wire. Lets now pull this code apart and examine each of its components in detail.

The
javax.ws.rs.client.Client
interface is the main entry point into the JAX-RS Client API.
Client
instances manage client socket connections and are pretty heavyweight. Instances of this interface should be reused wherever possible, as it can be quite expensive to create and destroy these objects.
Client
objects are created with the
ClientBuilder
class:
