As the interminable minutes and then hours rolled by, the never-ending stakeout began to seem futile. Geoffrey felt less and less convinced that Canal's mysterious neighbor was in fact Hélissenne, whether camouflaged on the outside, the inside, or both. A man had come to the door to deliver a tray of food to the alleged Melissa around one, reminding Geoffrey that he hadn't had a bite to eat for many an hour and soon wouldn't be able to find any real sustenance anywhere, all the local restaurants ceasing to seat diners after two in the afternoon.

Canal, who had quickly hidden in a linen closet on a few occasions when people had ventured as high up as the top floor, appeared unflappably impassive, giving Geoffrey an even greater sense that time was a-wasting. Hélissenne had been missing for three days at this point, and he could contact the police and try to get things moving. For all the good publicity he had heard about this inspector, perhaps he was, Geoffrey fumed, just another one of those lazy, good-for-nothing French functionaries who did as little as possible between two-hour lunches and three-hour dinners.
See more

5. Element Node Geometry and Scrolling Geometry

Slice ePub May 28, 2014

DOM nodes are parsed and painted into visual shapes when viewing HTML documents in a web browser. Nodes, mostly element nodes, have a corresponding visual representation made viewable/visual by browsers. To inspect and in some cases manipulate the visual representation and geometry of nodes programmatically, a set of APIs exist and are specified in the CSSOM View Module. A subset of methods and properties found in this specification provide an API to determine the geometry (i.e., size and position using offset) of element nodes as well as hooks for manipulating scrollable nodes and getting values of scrolled nodes. This chapter breaks down these methods and properties.

Most of the properties (excluding
scrollLeft
and
scrollTop
) from the CSSOM View Module specification are read-only and calculated each time they are accessed. In other words, the values are live.

Using the properties
offsetTop
and
offsetLeft
, we can get the offset pixel value of an element node from the
offsetParent
. These element node properties give us the distance in pixels from an elements outside top and left borders to the inside top and left borders of the
offsetParent
. The value of the
offsetParent
is determined by searching the nearest ancestor elements for an element that has a CSS position value not equal to
static
. If none are found, the
<body>
element, or what some refer to as the document (as opposed to the browser viewport), is the
offsetParent
value. If, during the ancestral search, a
<td>
,
<th>
, or
<table>
element with a CSS position value of
static
is found, this becomes the value of
offsetParent
.
See more

21 Parole, Good Time, and Discharge

Slice PDF May 18, 2014

Chapter twenty-one

parole, good time, and discharge

N

ow, to what you’ve all been waiting for: the frustrating rules governing an inmate’s release from prison. First—parole is not a right; it is not guaranteed to any inmate. Parole is a privilege. It is granted by the

Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, which consists of eighteen men and women who were appointed to their seats due to their avowed interest in law and order. Second—parole will be awarded when the members of the board decide, and their decision is subjective. It is also influenced by the political winds of the day, and by pressures brought to bear by overcrowded prisons and available money to build new ones.

So, if a convict tells you he is “up for parole,” don’t rush out to buy him clothes. All he is saying is that he is now eligible and that the board will shortly review his case and consider him for parole.

Before I go into details, let me stress those two points. Parole is not guaranteed, and there is no way to predict what the board will do in any given case. A man serving a twenty-year sentence for robbery may become eligible for parole after two and one-half years and be granted parole. Then again, he could be denied, reviewed every year thereafter and denied each time until he has done his entire twenty years, and it would all be perfectly legal, although rare.
See more
