5 Seeing the Past: Maps and Ottoman Historical Consciousness \ Giancarlo Casale

H Erdem Cipa Indiana University Press ePub

The world map commonly known as the “Mappamundi of Tunuslu Hajji Ahmed” easily ranks among the most significant achievements of early modern cartography. Created as a woodcut in an unknown Venetian workshop in 1559, it is the earliest known Turkish-language work of any kind to be designed for publication and sale in the Ottoman market. With the exception of two earlier charts by the famous cartographer Pīrī Re’īs (d. 1554), now extant only in fragmentary form, it also ranks as the oldest stand-alone Turcophone world map. Its copious companion text, intricately and painstakingly inscribed around the map’s outer margins, is among the most extensive original Turkish-language geographical treatises to have survived from the sixteenth century.1

Yet for all of these singular qualities, Hajji Ahmed’s map has attracted surprisingly little attention from Ottoman historians: no complete transcription or translation of its contents has ever been published; it is regularly omitted from catalogues and reference works devoted to Ottoman geography and cartography; and it has, to date, been studied by only a handful of scholars with the linguistic skills to read its contents. Even among these specialists, the main topic that seems to have generated genuine scholarly interest relates to the question of the “real” identity of its author, a subject first addressed by the philologist Victor L. Ménage in a seminal article published in 1958.2

Chapter 5 How Feeungs are Anchored

Thom Hartmann Berrett-Koehler Publishers ePub

Put the argument into a concrete shape, into an image, some
hard phrase, round and
solid as a ball, which they can see and handle and carry home with them, and the cause is half won.

— RALPH WALDO EMERSON

If you want to know how some politicians gained so much power through the 1990s, you can start with my former congressman, Newt Gingrich. Gingrich studied the way language and the brain work, cracked the communication code, and then set out to teach that code to his fellow Republicans.

Here’s the key message from his 1996 memo (and later video) with the Orwellian title, “Language: A Key Mechanism of Control.”1

Often we search hard for words to define our opponents. Sometimes we are hesitant to use contrast. Remember that creating a difference helps you. These are powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contrast. Apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals and their party.

The words that follow in Gingrich’s essay are designed to trigger the submodality filing system in our brains. They are all words heavy with emotion. The first set contains words Gingrich urged Republicans to use against their Democratic opponents:

Abstract

Nineteen late-blight resistant B3C1 potato genotypes received from the International Potato Center (CIP) and two local checks were planted in an exhibition trial conducted in three potato-growing locations on the Jos

Plateau of Nigeria in the 2007 rainy season. The field trials were situated in Bokkos, Kerang and Kuru as part of the accelerated variety selection scheme being promoted by CIP to speed up the release of new varieties and increase adoption rate. The objectives were to identify and select together with the farmers, high yielding and late-blight resistant genotypes and by so doing, popularize these genotypes in advance of their release. Eight B3C1 potato genotypes (P < 0.05) performed better than the local check at Kuru, while three gave higher yields than the local check at Kerang. In Bokkos, none of the B3C1 genotypes yielded greater than the local checks. Clones 392617.54, 393073.179 and 396026.103 gave tuber yields that were (P < 0.05) greater than the local checks in Kuru and Kerang with yields of 23.63, 25.24 and 19.79t/ha, respectively.

3. Displaying Content

John Zablocki O'Reilly Media ePub

As we saw in the previous chapter, getting a basic Orchard site up and running is a pretty low friction process. Without having to write a single line of code, we were able to create new pages with dynamic content and reasonably advanced functionality. However, we also saw that the content we displayed has a default rendering, which we cant fully customize through the admin tools.

Fortunately, Orchard does provide functionality to allow us to alter this rendering. In fact, with minimal effort Orchard gives us great control over how we display content. Virtually every piece of data that gets rendered by Orchard (collectively known as shapes) may be customized by overriding its default template. In this chapter, well learn about the conventions and tools that make this process relatively straightforward.

As it exists now, the bio projection page simply takes each field in our Bio content type and renders its label and value one after the other with each on its own line (see Figure3-1). It would be better if our content read a little more naturally, such as John Zablocki was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, and plays guitar for Daisys Gone. The label-value rendering might be sufficient for a product listing, but is less suited for our biography listing.
