9. Hardware on the Mac

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Printing has always been one of the Macs strong suitsand youre about to find out why.

Setting up a printer is incredibly easy. The first time you want to print something, follow this guide:

Connect the printer to the Mac, and then turn the printer on.

Inkjet printers connect to your USB jack. Laser printers hook up either to your USB jack or to your network (Ethernet or wireless).

Open the document you want to print. Choose FilePrint. In the Print dialog box, choose your printers name from the Printer pop-up menu (or one of its submenus, if any, like Nearby Printers). See Figure9-1.

Cool! Wasnt that easy? Very nice how the Mac autodiscovers, autoconfigures, and autolists almost any USB, FireWire, Bluetooth, or Bonjour printer.

Have a nice afternoon. The End.

Ohunless your printer isnt listed in the Printer pop-up menu. In that case, read on.

Nearby Printers refers to printers that arent connected directly to your Mac but are accessible anyway: a printer connected to an Apple Time Capsule or an AirPort base station, certain network printers that speak Bonjour, or printers connected to other Macs that youve shared, as described later in this chapter.

27. A Simple Way to Measure Website Performance

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Not so long ago, folks from Neustar demonstrated at Velocity Conference the possibility of effective client-side performance testing using only free, open-source solutions. They introduced bundle of tools, such as Selenium and BrowserMob Proxy. The first one is intended to automate emulation of user interactions, the second one is a good for metric capturing. That was really inspiring presentation.

The greatest feature of their approach was the fact that all performance data are consolidated into a single containerHTTP Archive (HAR). It makes further processing of test results more controlled and predictable due to strict format standardization.

However, there were no advanced tools for dealing with HAR files at that moment. HAR Viewer is wonderful but not suitable for common testing workflow. ShowSlow is instead a perfect example of a repository for automated performance measurement. Unfortunately, handling of HAR files is not the strongest trait of it. So a new project HAR Storage ( appeared.

Too Much... and Not Enough

Too Much… and Not Enough

I think that most at-home mothers, especially those with higher educations or professional backgrounds, struggle at some point or other with the feeling that they are letting their minds and their skills wither away, particularly in the early years. Many of us start out with high ideals. I for one yearned desperately to be able to stay home with our first child the first year after she was born, but was unable to.

When at last I was able to quit my job and embrace the full-time mothering I had longed for, I suffered through some terribly lonely, misunderstood, verrrrry looooong days. In fact, at the ends of some days, I felt downright disillusioned. I suppose I had known beforehand that staying home was all about babies and babbling, messes and mayhem, all day every day. But until I actually did it, I don’t think I fully appreciated the fact that staying home truly was all about babies and babbling, messes and mayhem, all day every day. It felt like too much. And not enough. All at the same time.
