9. Safety Check

Source: Healthy Travel
Slice ePub May 23, 2014

HETHER YOU ARE TRAVELING BY PLANE OR AUTOMOBILE, alone or with a companion, or if your children are traveling solo, the most important safety advice for anyone at any age is to use common sense: dont put yourself into situations where you increase your risk of getting lost, injured, attacked, or killed. If something doesnt feel right, it probably isnt.

Although many safety tips may seem quite obvious, travelersespecially those on vacationmay be looking for a good time while overlooking potential hazards. Its more fun to be laid back than it is to be vigilant, but at an unfamiliar destination or in a foreign land, awareness of your surroundings is a necessity.

Know and obey the laws of the country in which you are traveling. Dont assume that what is acceptable in the United States is acceptable abroad! Get international law information at

Know where you are headed, and know how to get back. Be prepared for a road emergency. Teach your children what to do if you are separated. Be careful with your credit cards and other identificationidentity theft occurs worldwide, so dont think it cant happen to you (see page 128). By following the guidelines in this chapter, youll substantially decrease your chances of jeopardizing your safety and well-being, or that of your family.

14. Inside the Compiler

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

As demonstrated in the previous chapter, the Closure Compiler is a tremendous tool, but it turns out that it has even more to offer if you are willing to take a peek at the source code. For starters, there are additional optimizations and checks that you can enable if you use the Compiler via its programmatic API, as explained in the section Hidden Options. Then in Example: Extending CommandLineRunner, you will learn how to create your own Compiler executable that will run exactly the compiler passes that you want. Finally, you will explore the Compilers internal representation of a JavaScript program in Example: Visualizing the AST Using DOT, before creating your own compiler passes in Example: Creating a Compiler Check and Example: Creating a Compiler Optimization. But before diving into any of those things, we will take a tour of the codebase of the Closure Compiler.

Chapter12 provided a simple example of using the Closure Compiler via its programmatic API. This section will examine the classes from the package used in that example, as well as some others that will be necessary to follow the code samples that appear later in this chapter.

Chapter Fourteen

Blood and Guts

Lawyer Amanda Bonner: And after you shot your husband... how did you feel?

Defendant Doris Attinger: Hungry!

Adams Rib, 1949

Patrick lost another one in the dark and rain. He was very high up the mountain, where the terrain is steep and treacherous. Hed been tracking a buck and took a shot. The hit was fatal, but the kill wasnt instantaneous. Running after it, Patrick found bone, blood, and hair before the pounding rain washed the trace away. A weaker animal would have dropped in its tracks. Five friends came out the next morning to look for it, and all they found was the gut pile left by a stranger whod stumbled across it.

Is it poaching to take another mans quarry? Its not unusual for hunters to lose their animals in the forest. Humans stand out. Animals blend in. Within seconds, the wildlife can vanish, even if you know exactly where they are going. So if a hunter stumbles across a buck felled by another mans bullet, the right thing to do is to dress and hang the carcass, alert the game warden, and have a nice day. To walk off with the deer violates an unwritten code. Its the hunters version of the girl crush. A nice girl never steals a boy that her girlfriend likes. A tramp would hit on him just for fun, and steal him if she could. Its one of the ways you know shes a tramp. Sure, alls fair in love and warbut in real life, its not exactly true.

15. Pods need platforms

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

What we need to do is learn to work in the system, by which I mean that everybody, every team, every platform, every division, every component is there not for individual competitive profit or recognition, but for contribution to the system as a whole on a win-win basis.

A podular organization requires support structures that network the pods together so they can coordinate their activities, share learning, and increase the companys overall effectiveness. Platforms are support structures that increase the effectiveness of a community.

A platform is a support structure that increases the effectiveness of a community. Some platforms are public. For example, a local farmers market or swap meet clusters sellers together so they can attract more buyers. Like local swap meets, eBay and Craigslist provide platforms for people to buy and sell used goods or unique items. Amazons Mechanical Turk provides a marketplace for buyers and sellers of human labor at a micro scaletiny bits of work for tiny bits of money. The Internet is another public platform. So is the Global Positioning System (GPS) that allows you to track your location by satellite.

For the Mind Explorers

What have you done to some of us privately, to perhaps all publicly since you have

Taken away our fables, a child’s toys, taken and hidden, sometimes destroyed them,

Or so it seems, ‘for our good’. What is this ‘good’ that comes with no nurses

That a language, a tongue or one imagination require? You have lived, acted, written, some of you even

Have prophesied, have thus taken over our old role while we stand, gagged, hands tied, in a small cell.

But not for long. We see to that, we confound you by admitting you, by letting you

Trespass upon preserves poets once thought theirs alone. We do more,

We grant you a dispensation to take away our symbols, but in our wakeful nights, since you have now

Taken away at least some of our dreams, we are gentle with you, own you and like the

Raiders, but not spoilers, we have always been, we have plundered, your found, held coins and

With extreme delicacy, been Midas with what you have done, said or thought. So our magnanimity must

Admit its debt to you – no war, no rage, no guilt, only now gratitude and a gentleness.
