15. Porting Our Dialog to Polymer

Slice ePub February 24, 2015

Jarrod Overson

There are 200 ways to write any one thing in browserland JavaScript, 400 ways of writing an encapsulated component, and 800 ways of porting any one component implemented within one framework to another.

We’ll go over two such ways.

Web components provide a lot. They also introduce many questions, and each one of those questions can be answered differently depending on perspective, time constraints, and development attitude. Web components, at their base, provide a layer of abstraction and push an API touchpoint to the HTML itself. This is already a win, and for a lot of people, that is the primary appeal.

At the other extreme, there are people who see web components as an opportunity to implement the next generation of building blocks that will compose the Web of the future. There are already implementations of spec proposals floating around on the Internet, and it’s not a stretch to believe that independently developed individual web components may end up as official elements existing in the actual HTML spec one day.

Strategic Visioning

Bringing Insight to Action

One of the more difficult lessons to learn is to recognize current reality as it now is, which often is different from what you think it is supposed to be or how you want it to be.

Real-Life Story

The Save the Redwoods League (SRL) is a California-based organization committed to preserving some of the oldest—and tallest—organisms on the planet. SRL has a long and successful history of preserving old-growth redwoods since its founding in 1918. Although skillful in its efforts, the league had never developed a formal strategy, and external factors began to make the need more evident. The election of a new board president and appointment of a new executive director—combined with growing public misperception that its mission had largely been accomplished—led the league’s directors to undertake a process to chart a course for the next five years. It was important to them that the process lead to a strong consensus among key stakeholders, resulting in a compelling vision linked to actionable strategies, and that the process be able to handle the complexity of the issues.

1. Starting Point—Wanting to Be Healthy

Slice ePub January 09, 2014

My wealth is health and perfect ease.

“Your health is your most valuable asset.” I can still hear my high school gym teacher saying those words twenty years ago. It was true then, it is true now, and it will always be true. Every time I have been sick, with even the most minor of illnesses, I’d think what I wouldn’t give to be feeling better. Your health is your most taken-for-granted asset, and it’s something that isn’t truly valued until it has gone away.

Recently, a patient came to my office at his wife’s urging. He was a thirty-year-old man with no previous medical problems. Married for three years, he was was the proud father of a six-month baby girl. Generally he reported feeling well, except that, over the past year, since before the baby had been born, he was more tired than usual. He felt stressed at work, but nothing out of the ordinary for him. He didn’t feel depressed. Basically, he didn’t know why he felt so bad. Tired of hearing him complain, his wife insisted he make an appointment. Immediately, he and I both noticed the significant increase in his weight. Prior to his marriage, he was a respectable, slightly overweight, 215 pounds. At the time of this visit, he thought his weight might have gone up a little, but was shocked to see he had actually gained forty-five pounds. He attributed this weight gain to a variety of factors. With the arrival of the new baby, he was no longer exercising, he was eating a lot more fast food at work, and he was also eating larger portions of food at every meal.
