CHAPTER TWO: Out cold

Source: Scum
Slice ePub May 25, 2014

Eternities earlier than grammar school drowned by the ritual of primary school wandering grey streets respite in The Woods the lug of tired frame through rusted gates slumped under words rotas that buried him. The Woods seemed to change even before animal killers chased him out for good their acceptance indifference on long wet days when he hurt himself went numb with cold wet prickling bitingly icy stinging itching spoiling what would happen if things got worse.

Primary school should have been better than the grey box wasn’t. Stuck from the start why people were there they him filed into a classroom why do they do this walking into a room together?

Words

“Where d’ya get that pencil?”
“Wanna come to my house afta?”
“Have y’seen my satchel?”
“We’ve gorra a new cat.”

Why these words? How did they know when to talk stop talking know what to say next? Silence desk lids open— how? All this all day every day no hope of work exhausted by noon fending off a thousand orienting disorienting events once twice caught sight of why they were there a shaft of dust sunlight painted a stripe across the room everyone settled at desks ready to begin he a part of them convulsed ribs knifed passed out stone still awake out cold stabbed dying flesh pounded dust dust to dust crushing machinery oblivious to the fact the job long since complete donkey work rampant parasite contraption evaded by dissolving melting if this fails become an alien. Might the crusher pause malfunction detect a misshapen boulder? Never. Flesh blood nerve endings no longer exposed anxiety pain renewed convulsions all efforts futile uncaring risks to avoid crusher force useless. Ebbed away to the extent that he no longer had a foothold on the planet not distress a catastrophe as these far reaches lie within moments of extinction numb blind to the emergency all emergencies long since taken care of coma gave way to naked terror body dismembered floating shrivelled parts feet first legs then arms torso finally face head what was left of his mind thrashing snatching chasing after extremities in the time left before the rest disappears lost for good. Anyone shot into the void at these speeds enough to rip limb from limb who lives to tell the tale spends life in mortal panic unaware that the only thing of importance is to remain unaware of the irruption that killed them.

7. Photoshop Layers

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Camera: Nikon D1

Layers are an essential part of the Photoshop workflow, and this chapter aims to make Layers one of your favorite techniques.

But what are Layers exactly? If you imagine the individual correction steps you perform on an image as a stack of perfectly aligned images where you can only see the top one, you are getting close. But Photoshop Layers can do much more than just document individual correction steps. The three most important characteristics of Layers are:

They have a specific Opacity, with values between 0% (fully transparent) and 100% (fully opaque).

They can be merged with other layers using various techniques and tools.

Layer Masks allow you to apply the effects of individual Layers selectively, i.e., to precisely selected image areas.

There are many different types of subtle changes you can make to your images using Layers. Adjustment Layers and Smart Filters even allow you to readjust your individual corrections later also an extremely useful feature.

Layers were invented to help graphic artists with their work, but we limit ourselves here to aspects of layers that help in the course of the digital photo workflow. Layers are a powerful tool, but images that contain layers require more memory and disk space than other image files. Working with 16-bit or 32-bit layers requires even more memory and computing power.

7 The Courageous Training Code: Seven Ways to Strengthen Your Leadership Backbone

Slice ePub May 15, 2014

Courageous Training leaders see themselves as leaders, not administrators, of a training function, though training itself is part of what they do. They also do not see themselves as training vendors, though they do supply training and may bring in training companies to help provide high-quality programs. They do not see themselves as coordinators or brokers of training services, though they do help link people and organizational units with the learning and performance services they need.

Above all, they see themselves as leaders, with responsibilities to the business and the people in it to ensure effective performance and worthwhile results—not just training results but 118business results. Like other leaders in the organization, they are stewards of precious resources, and it is their duty to see that these resources are leveraged into the greatest value possible. Like other leaders in the organization, they have a responsibility to establish and inculcate a vision, to articulate a strategy, to set priorities and goals that reflect the strategy, to ensure effective execution of strategy, and to develop others’ skills and talents so that they are maximally successful.

Traditionally, telecom operators have used custom designed, vertically integrated solution for RCB which often results in a complex system that is difficult to adapt to new service offerings. With telecom operator’s desire to capitalize on cloud computing by using their vast amount of infrastructure, the need for a RCB solution that serves the needs of cloudified telcos is needed.

Software Above the Level of a Single Device

Source: What is Web 2.0
Slice ePub May 27, 2014

One other feature of Web 2.0 that deserves mention is the fact that it's no longer limited to the PC platform. In his parting advice to Microsoft, long time Microsoft developer Dave Stutz pointed out that "Useful software written above the level of the single device will command high margins for a long time to come."

Of course, any web application can be seen as software above the level of a single device. After all, even the simplest web application involves at least two computers: the one hosting the web server and the one hosting the browser. And as we've discussed, the development of the web as platform extends this idea to synthetic applications composed of services provided by multiple computers.

But as with many areas of Web 2.0, where the "2.0-ness" is not something new, but rather a fuller realization of the true potential of the web platform, this phrase gives us a key insight into how to design applications and services for the new platform.
