<p> <b>M</b>ost school districts are busy places. In a school district that has opened nine new schools every year for more than a decade, “busy” is an understatement. Such is the case in the Clark County School District (CCSD) in Las Vegas, Nevada, the fifth-largest district in the United States. The student population is fast surpassing 314,000. It employs more than 37,000 people, including 19,000 teachers, 11,000 support staff personnel, 1,300 administrators, 150 school police, and 6,000 substitute and temporary employees. The district has more than 160337 schools within its boundary of approximately 8,000 square miles. </p><p> In such a vast organization, with its environment of rapid growth and all of the challenges that causes, why would any one employee attempt to initiate a new approach to conceptualizing and managing training? This feeling can cause us to place a huge emphasis on achieving victory for ourselves in order to keep these good feelings coming. </p><p> Sometimes, however, it’s even better to enjoy the victories of others, especially those we care about. Most everyone knows the joy of watching children who are important to us win in sports, a spelling bee, a music competition, or even a silly game at a county or state fair. And we are often ready to sacrifice our own benefit to help kids in situations like this to win. Certainly most parents know this feeling—we want our kids to be winners. That desire is most often for their benefit and happiness rather than just our own ego satisfaction. </p><p> 60 </p><p> Similarly, when we choose to mentor someone who is less experienced in an area where we possess expertise, we want them to win. Thus it contributes an increasing portion of the power budget of the interconnection system. Link power management has been receiving more attention and many mechanisms were proposed. The emerging bit-serial link technology allows the links to work with different numbers of lanes & speeds. When the traffic load is slight, links are put in low-speed mode and consume less energy. However, links working in the low speed mode result in the increase in serialization latency. We propose a routing algorithm that takes into account the history usage of the links to focus network traffic in a small subset of high-speed links. It keeps high-speed links busier and leaves low-speed links with more idle time. <p> <i>David Wood</i> </p><p>“If I could tell you what it meant, there would be no point in dancing it.”</p><p>—Isadora Duncan (in Bateson, 1973, p. 110)</p><p>The quote with which this chapter opens is to be found in a paper by Gregory Bateson entitled “Style, grace and information in primitive art” (Bateson, 1973), in which it is asserted that, “Art becomes, in this sense, an exercise in communicating about the species of unconsciousness” (p. 110). Bateson considers that one possible meaning of Duncan’s remark was that “if the message [she were trying to communicate] were the sort of message that could be communicated in words, there would be no point in dancing it, but it is not that sort of message”. Some messages cannot be communicated in words, and it is with such wordless messages, communicated through profound silence in groups that meet for the purpose of psychotherapy, with which this chapter is concerned. (I have borrowed this latter phrase from Hopper because it emphasises that, despite the group context, the individual is the focus of the therapeutic endeavour; in other words, it is not the “group” <i>qua </i>group (the group as a group) that is seeking help, but the individuals who have chosen to meet together for the purpose of getting help individually.)</p><a class="default-logo-link" href="/ebooks/321185-the-silent-child-communication-without-words">See more</a>
