15. Ajax Data: XML or JSON?

Slice ePub May 29, 2014

In Chapter14, we looked at a simple Ajax application that called a web service, which returned the result as an HTML fragment. We then pasted the fragment into the web page using an elements
innerHTML
property. Although that is an effective approach, its limited, especially if you want to further process the returned results. Two other ways to process returned data from web services via Ajax calls are generally more popular: formatting the data as XML, and formatting it as JavaScript Object Notation (JSON).

This chapter looks at how you can modify the application in Chapter14 to return the result as XML, and as JSON, and discusses when to use one over the other. Rather than pasting a formatted list into the page, youll use the data from both to create a second selection element, with the cities added as options into the selection.

One advantage to returning a response formatted as XML is that the data can be much more complex than simple strings, or preformatted data in HTML. In addition, you can use the same Document Object Model (DOM) methods to work with the web pages elements and to work with the XML document returned in an Ajax call.

4. The Ten Decisions

Slice ePub May 28, 2014

Every cameraevery camera, from the cheesiest cameraphone to a $5,000 digital SLRhas an auto mode. You point, you click. The end. Next chapter!

But the fact that you've gone to the trouble of reading a book about photography suggests thatjust maybeyou're interested in going beyond auto.

That's what this chapter is for. It's the heart of the book. It breaks down that one-second event (point, click) into a many-pages-long sequence of the 10 large and small decisions that go into taking a single picture.

Of course, you'll probably never actually have to make all 10 of these decisions for a single shot. It's just that these are the photographic choices you can make. The trick is to learn when to call up each option.

In other words, read it all anyway. You may discover camera features you didn't know existed, approaches you might not have considered, and a tip or trick that sticks with you for the rest of your life.

This chapter also gives you some insight into why photography is something of a black art. With so many variables at play, it's virtually impossible to say, "These settings are the correct settings." As a result, there are few more opinionated, cantankerous citizens of the Internet than photographers. Canon or Nikon? RAW or JPEG? Auto or manual? It's a parade of religious battles that will never end.

Soapstone Creek

Slice PDF February 16, 2015

Soapstone Creek

The creek sings all night long and all night long we listen in our sleep, waking from dreams we recognise as our own undersong to grief, a gabble of diverted streams under the paths our lives took, our children’s lives we listened to so avidly but missed the earliest signs where the ground first gives, tracks to the water in our own tracks twist, thinking how blessed we were, wise our choices, skirting the treacherous silt. Yet all the while those streams, under the cover of animal voices, were making a mockery of free will.

Nothing’s as constant as the creek. The silence of the forest depends on it. Our deeds, misdeeds, omissions too, make no more sense than rattle-cries, flung where the kingfisher breeds.

Under the alders’ canopy that steals their share of sunlight, understory trees, spread their leaves as they may, can only feel sun sideways. And some grow accordingly.

Soapstone Retreat

Late summer sun is falling through the forest.

As if the forest knew it would soon turn yellow, it shifts a little, stars in the creek below signalling to the sunlight on its crest.

Be Inspired

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

A large portion of this book has been dedicated to selecting the right equipment and other technical issues. Countless other books, magazines, and online articles also review these subjects in great detail. The reason for this imposing presence is simple enough: of all the elements involved in the creation of an image, they are the easiest to quantify and discuss endlessly. Ultimately, though, they are also the least relevant. After all, even if you bought the most expensive equipment and spent years practicing exposure and focus, you could end up with images that are technically sound, but not necessarily interesting or inspiring. The ultimate goal should be to master photography technique and understand your equipment so using them is second nature to you, allowing you to instead focus on what really matters: the creation of a compelling and powerful image.

Sonnie Trotter photographed by Andrew Burr on Air Swedin (5.13 R), Indian Creek, Utah. 15. Sound, Movies, Speech, and Handwriting

Slice ePub May 28, 2014

For years, as other computer companies whipped themselves into a frenzy trying to market one multimedia computer or another, Mac fans just smiled. Macs have been capable of displaying sound and graphicsno add-on sound, graphics, or video boards requiredfrom day one, years before the word multimedia was even coined.

The Mac's superiority at handling sound and video continues in Mac OS X. QuickTime, for example, is software that lets you play digital movies on your screen and watch live "streaming" broadcasts from the Internet. This chapter covers both creative pursuits: creating and using sound, and playing and editing movies.

As a bonus, this chapter also covers Mac OS X's speech features (how to command your Mac by voice, as well as making your Mac talk back) and even Ink, Mac OS X's bizarre little handwriting-recognition system.

You can have a lot of fun with digital soundsif you know where to find them, where to put them, and how to edit them. You can play almost any kind of digitized sound files, even MP3 files, right in the Finderif you put its window into column view. But that's just the beginning.
