4. Using ASP.NET AJAX JavaScript Extensions

Christian Wenz O'Reilly Media ePub

In addition to delivering a considerable amount of Ajax functionality in an easy-to-use framework, ASP.NET AJAX provides a number of additions to JavaScript that can make client coding easier. Among these are OOP-style constructs, such as namespaces, inheritance, and interfaces, as well as client-side reimplementations that resemble .NET constructs such as StringBuilder. Also, selected JavaScript objects are enriched with new features.

By including the ASP.NET AJAX ScriptManager control into a web page, you automatically get a number of useful helper functions and shortcuts to important JavaScript features. Some of these new functions just save you some typing. Some of them, however, offer a much greater advantage: they are browser-agnostic. For instance, Internet Explorer on one side and all other modern browsers on the other side each provide their unique way to attach event listeners (see Chapter2). The code in ASP.NET AJAX detects the browser type and automatically uses the appropriate function on every system.

Satinder Bal Gupta and C.P. Gandhi Laxmi Publications PDF

In the present chapter, we introduce the concept of algebraic system, binary operations and groups. The study of cyclic groups, normal groups, group homomorphism etc. help us in understanding various applications of computer science. Groups play an important role in coding theory.

If there exists a system such that it consists of a non-empty set and one or more operations on that set, then that system is called an algebraic system. It is generally denoted by

(A, op1, op2, ..., opn), where A is a non-empty set and op1, op2, ..., opn are operations on A.

An algebraic system is also called an algebraic structure because the operations on the set A define a structure on the elements of A.

Consider a non-empty set A and a function f such that f : A × A → A, then f is called a binary operation on A whose domain is the set of ordered pairs of elements of A. If ∗ is a binary operation on A, then it may be written as a ∗ b.

9 Beit Sahour II: From Dialogue to Action

Hillel Bardin Indiana University Press ePub

After prison it was good to get back to the dialogues with our group from Beit Sahour. The first few discussions were at Ghassan’s house in the evening. Across from his house was a driveway that led into an inner court, hidden from the street. There, we would park our cars so that soldiers would not see them. After several dialogues, the Palestinians decided to have each meeting at a different home, so as not to attract too much attention to any one house. For me it was interesting to be in different homes, so that I could see how people lived and meet each host’s family.

One evening, toward the end of the session, Ghassan asked whether we would like to meet a man who had just been released from five months in the Ketziot prison camp in the Negev desert. We all agreed, and walked a couple of blocks to the home of Dr. Jad Isaac, an agronomist who taught at Bethlehem University. I had read about Dr. Jad in the papers. One tactic of the intifada was to make the Palestinians more self-sufficient and less dependent on the Israeli economy. This could help economically and would make it easier for people to survive the frequent curfews. Many Palestinians began growing pigeons and chickens as a local supply of protein. Jad opened a plant store and gave the urbanized population instructions about growing vegetable gardens in their backyards, similar to the “victory gardens” of World War II. The authorities saw this as weakening their control, and ordered him to close his store, which he did. Nonetheless, he was arrested and given six months’ administrative detention. “Detention” may sound like house arrest, but it is in fact imprisonment in a prison, with the only difference being that the detainee does not know what he is charged with and gets no trial.

3. The Python Interpreter

Alex Martelli O'Reilly Media ePub

The Python interpreter program is run as python (its named python.exe on Windows). python includes both the interpreter itself and the Python compiler, which is implicitly invoked, as needed, on imported modules. Depending on your system, the program may have to be in a directory listed in your PATH environment variable. Alternatively, as with any other program, you can give a complete pathname to it at a command (shell) prompt, or in the shell script (or .BAT file, shortcut target, etc.) that runs it.[1] On Windows, you can also use Start Programs Python 2.4 Python (command line).

Besides PATH, other environment variables affect the python program. Some environment variables have the same effects as options passed to python on the command line, as documented in the next section. A few environment variables provide settings not available via command-line options:

The Python installation directory. A lib subdirectory, containing the standard Python library modules, should exist under this directory. On Unix-like systems, the standard library modules should be in subdirectory lib/python-2.3 for Python 2.3, lib/python-2.4 for Python 2.4, and so on.

Working the Situation

Jack Dykinga Rocky Nook-IPS ePub

Occasionally, strong images appear to suddenly jump into my camera, but that’s not the norm. I usually spend a lot of time fussing about compositions. I circle the principal elements to imagine compositions, I change the camera angle, I shoot into the light or with the light, and I change lens focal lengths. I call this working the situation.

Of course, there’s always something about a subject or scene that draws my initial attention. The challenge is to create an image that shows the viewer the aspect I found so interesting. After hiking all over the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, I found a curved yucca emerging from a partially buried base in a pristine section of dunes. I loved the simplicity of the scene. The series of six images shown here demonstrates how I worked the situation.

My first image [1] was made as the pre-dawn Earth-shadow light began to illuminate the sky. I wanted to show the transition of color in the sky and composed accordingly. I left plenty of room at the top of the frame to illustrate the light known as the Belt of Venus and photographed the progression of the light’s intensity and color until I felt I had what I was after. Ultimately, this occurred when the first light of dawn kissed the mountainous background.
