4. Setting Up BIND

Source: DNS and BIND
Slice ePub May 27, 2014

"It seems very pretty," she said when she had finished it, "but it's rather hard to understand!" (You see she didn't like to confess, even to herself, that she couldn't make it out at all.) "Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideasonly I don't exactly know what they are!"

If you have been diligently reading each chapter of this book, you're probably anxious to get a nameserver running. This chapter is for you. Let's set up a couple of nameservers. Others of you may have read the table of contents and skipped directly to this chapter. (Shame on you!) If you are one of those people, be aware that we may use concepts from earlier chapters and expect you to understand them already.

There are several factors that influence how you should set up your nameservers. The biggest is what sort of access you have to the Internet: complete access (e.g., you can FTP to, limited access (restricted by a security firewall), or no access at all. This chapter assumes you have complete access. We'll discuss the other cases in Chapter 11.

10. Structures and Unions and Bit-Fields

Source: C in a Nutshell
Slice ePub May 27, 2014

The pieces of information that describe the characteristics of objects, such as information on companies or customers, are generally grouped together in records . Records make it easy to organize, present, and store information about similar objects.

A record is composed of fields that contain the individual details, such as the name, address, and legal form of a company. In C, you determine the names and types of the fields in a record by defining a structure type. The fields are called the members of the structure.

A union is defined in the same way as a structure. Unlike the members of a structure, all the members of a union start at the same address. Hence you define a union type when you want to use the same location in memory for different types of objects.

In addition to the basic and derived types, the members of structures and unions can also include bit-fields . A bit-field is an integer variable composed of a specified number of bits. By defining bit-fields, you can break down an addressable memory unit into groups of individual bits that you can address by name.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN: Psychoanalysis and war Psychoanalysis and war—response to Diana Birkett

Slice ePub May 25, 2014

Isobel Hunter-Brown

Ms Birkett is to be congratulated on bringing to our attention important issues regarding Psychoanalysis -L V J- and war [British Journal of Psychotherapy, 8(3)]. My own feeling like hers is that it would be good to see more psychoanalytic contributions on the effects of militarism (and of the lessening of humanitarianism in our present day society too). There are, however, a number of aspects of her article which require response.

She begins with two criticisms of psychoanalysis: (1) that, generally, it should have had more to say on the effects of social changes on the individual psyche; and (2) that it has an addiction to infantile fantasy and ignores the impact of current realities. In particular she mentions the realities of persecution, war, migration, and the concentration camp and holocaust.

She conveys the impression that psychoanalysts have only recently begun to realize the damage wrought by these disasters but, though there may be a relative paucity of literature, psycho analysts have been writing about them for many years. Contributions are too numerous to mention but in 1968 a series of papers for a conference on the effects of social disaster was included in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. On the nuclear threat, a six-page bibliography was published in the International Review of Psycho analysis (1987) which included psychoanalytic papers dating back to 1946.

9. Accelerate Your Development Using the Apigee API Console

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

It seems these days that every service provider must offer a developer API for their services if they are to attract partners. This rise of the API economy has been well documented and discussed for some time. What may be a bit more lacking than APIs themselves, however, are tools to make API usage simpler for the average third-party developer. Apigee is a company bent on changing that.

I briefly introduced Apigees PayPal API Console in a recent PayPal DevZone blog post. Theres much more to be said and shown with the console, however, so lets explore!

First up, lets briefly revisit just what the console is and the kinds of things you can do with it.

Apigee announced their free PayPal API console at the Innovate 2010 conference. They noted in their announcement:

The API Console provides a really easy way to learn, debug, and test the APIs by allowing you to view request and response pairs, drill into errors, and share code snapshots with others.

PayPal Senior Director Damon Hougland provided his own description in a post on The PayPal Blog:
