Urique was founded in 1691 by a Spanish prospector. It lies in the deepest gorge of the Copper Canyon maze and takes a lot of work to reach. If you want to do things after getting down there, you need to stay overnight. The town is basically one main street (that is being paved this year) and has a new hotel (see below). The gorge has numerous columns and spires dotted with tropical plants that make the town picturesque.

The enormity of the gorge intimidates even the most avid hiker. However, going on a hike is a must. Trails are clear and often have barricades along the edge to keep you from falling over. The cliffs have vegetation clinging to every stone.

Looking down into the canyon

The new hotel and restaurant (unnamed, as yet) in town is owned by Elena Acosta. I have not seen it so I can't give a firsthand opinion. I have been told that it is fairly plush for Urique.

Caon de Urique Hotel, main street, $, is the one basic hotel in town. Each room has a private bathroom and a bed.

There are home stay programs in this village. The great thing about a home stay program is that the locals (rather than hotel chains) get your cash in exchange for a cultural experience. Ask at the store in town.

8. Let’s Take This Offline

Mark Pilgrim O'Reilly Media ePub

What is an offline web application? At first glance, it sounds like a contradiction in terms. Web pages are things you download and render. Downloading implies a network connection. How can you download when youre offline? Of course, you cant. But you can download when youre online. And thats how HTML5 offline applications work.

At its simplest, an offline web application is just a list of URLs pointing to HTML, CSS, or JavaScript files, images, or any other kinds of resources that may be present. The home page of the offline web application points to this list, called a manifest file, which is just a text file located elsewhere on the web server. A web browser that implements HTML5 offline applications will read the list of URLs from the manifest file, download the resources, cache them locally, and automatically keep the local copies up to date as they change. When you try to access the web application without a network connection, your web browser will automatically switch over to the local copies instead.

CHAPTER 9: On-the-Job Survival Skills

Janet I. Farley JIST Publishing ePub

You did it. Despite the economic gloom and doom broadcast 24/7 to the world in general, you have a job, are happy about it, and are soon to receive your first paycheck. Don’t spend it all in one place. In fact, you might want to keep in mind a few cold, hard facts as you begin to enjoy your new career as a true blue civilian.

Fact #1: Your new job is not perfect.

At first, it may seem that way, but the “honeymoon” will eventually end. You’ll see your new job for what it is, and although you may genuinely like it, it is just another step along the way in your career. It will have good days and bad ones, not unlike your life in uniform.

Fact #2: This won’t be your last job.

Although it may be a good job, it probably won’t be your last one. Chances are good that you will change employers several times over the course of your career. Accept this fact and keep your resume updated at all times. You never know when you will need it for an internal opportunity or something bigger and better elsewhere.

Elizabeth Jennings Carcanet Press Ltd. PDF

I visited the place where we last met.

Nothing was changed, the gardens were well-tended,

The fountains sprayed their usual steady jet;

There was no sign that anything had ended

And nothing to instruct me to forget.

The thoughtless birds that shook out of the trees,

Singing an ecstasy I could not share,

Played cunning in my thoughts. Surely in these

Pleasures there could not be a pain to bear

Or any discord shake the level breeze.

It was because the place was just the same

That made your absence seem a savage force,

For under all the gentleness there came

An earthquake tremor: fountain, birds and grass

Were shaken by my thinking of your name.

Always we have believed

We can change overnight,

Put a different look on the face,

Old passions out of sight:

And find new days relieved

Of all that we regretted

But something always stays

And will not be outwitted.

Say we put on dark glasses,

Wear different clothes and walk

With a new unpractised stride –

Always somebody passes

Undeceived by disguises

Or the different way we talk.
