This clinical paper—the last one read to the British Psycho-Analytical Society—was published in its Scientific Bulletin. The author postulates here that the moment in which tntrqfectton becomes possible is when an object can be given its freedom to come and go at will and how the moment of “closure” sets in motion the depressive struggle towards introjective identification.
In Explorations in Autism (1975) some evidence was adduced from the psychoanalytic treatment of autistic children that suggested a stage In the evolution of the personality prior to the formation of the concepts of internal and external spaces. On this basts a fairly extensive discussion of two-, three- and four-dimensional worlds was entered into, during which it was suggested that time as an aspect of reality was similarly imperfectly apprehended as oscillating, circular, and linear time, respectively. In The Psychoanalytical Process (Meltzer, 1967a) it had been suggested that one major mode of operation of the therapeutic method was to allow for new qualities to be introjected into the internal objects, thus enhancing them with analytic capability as the necessary equipment for self-analysis. Evidence of this enhancement, therefore, could be used as an indicator of a patient’s readiness to terminate.See All Chapters

Nature understands no jesting. She is
— JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE
Amajor reason that prospects do not buy is because they do not fully understand what you are selling and how they can use and benefit from it. Many salespeople assume that after one sales presentation, the prospect is as familiar with the details of the product or service as they are. This can be a big mistake.
When I was selling participations in real estate investments to senior executives, I falsely assumed that these captains of industry, with hundreds and sometimes thousands of staff, were as knowledgeable about real estate as they were about their own businesses. As a result, I would often breeze through the details of my product and expect them to understand the full range of benefits and advantages of what I was offering.
It didn’t take me too many lost sales to realize that I had to explain my product in careful detail, exactly as if I was teaching a new subject to a new student, if I wanted to sell it. This was my introduction to the importance of positioning myself as a teacher in the sales process.See All Chapters

The Windows registry is a bit like high school detention: nobody wants to go, but most of us end up there for one reason or another. And a few outcasts even prefer it.
The registry essentially does two things for Windows: its a database of settings for most of your applications and Windows itself, and its a repository of technical data for installed hardware devices and software components.
For instance, all of your file type associationsthe links between your documents and the applications that created themare built from registry data. Your network settings, your hardware settings, each of your applications customizable toolbars, and even Windows own Control Panel settings are all stored in the registry. The checkboxes you check or uncheck in most Options windows are saved in the registry. And the various software building blocks used by nearly every programsincluding those that come with Windowsare registered in your registry.
But why is the storage mechanism for all these settings the least bit important?See All Chapters

The “linguistic turn” in postmodern and poststructural criticism has had a major impact on the landscape of the humanities and social sciences and the way we conceive and communicate our various concerns. Words such as “text,” “writing,” “inscription,” “discourse,” “language,” “code,” “representation,” and so on are now part of the vernacular in critical discussion. Indeed, over the years the textualizing of objects and methodologies has generated new interdisciplinary formations across the academy and transformed the content, approach, and even the justifications for research. On the political front we have seen similar shifts in the practices, modes of argumentation, and even the alliances and strategies that once identified particular social movements and struggles for equity. And all this because the material self-evidence of initial conditions or first causes, those stable analytical parameters that allow us to identify a problem and then debate what needs to be done to correct it, has suffered a significant assault. Although in a very real sense political contestation has always debated first principles, once the substantive difference between nature and culture, or temporal priority and causal directionality is disestablished, we enter a very different zone of political possibility.See All Chapters
