I am quite influenced by the thinking of Christopher Lasch. I like his combining of psychotherapeutic language and political/social understanding, which reminds me of both Gestalt therapy’s Paul Goodman and Paulo Freire. I also think it is important for psychotherapists to take on board social critiques of our activities, rather than to assume that we are the “good guys”.

“Even when therapists speak of the need for ‘meaning’ and ‘love’, they define love and meaning simply as the fulfillment of the patient’s emotional requirements … To liberate humanity from such outmoded ideas of love and duty has become the mission of the post-Freudian therapies and particularly of their converts and popularizers, for whom mental health means the overthrow of inhibitions and the immediate gratification of every impulse”

(Lasch, 1979, p. 13)

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where –” said Alice.

Whatever Happened

To . . . ?

researched online to see if I could find out what happened to some of the people I knew. That search gave me more understanding of

the kind of men I worked with in Vietnam and how the war affected their lives. I found J. S. Brigham, Jr., Lieutenant Colonel, USAR Retired, President of the 7th United States Cavalry Association. He ob-

served, “You must have been there with the Red Cross girls up by the

15th Medical area. The girls had been to our officers club at the 2/7th. I was with Myron diduryk when we came over there one night to pick some of the girls up to come down. Just to get a look at an American girl was always great.”1 He was the scary, tall 1st lieutenant with the big mustache in the faded fatigues. He came to pick us up to go to their party only a day or two after I arrived in country. 1st Lt J. S. Brigham, Jr., retired from the Army Reserve in 1983 as a lieutenant colonel. He lives in North Carolina with his wife, Judy. They have three grown children.

11. Debugging

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

When youre first starting out in Rails, its easy to wonder what exactly is going on at any given moment. Web applications by their very nature are tricky to debug, as so much happens before you see an answer. Fortunately, Rails includes tools to figure out whats going wrong while applications are running. Debugging tools keep evolving, but theres a basic set you should understand from the beginning.

Im sure it was facetious, but an old programmer once told me that the real reason the PRINT statement was invented was for debugging. While it may not be aesthetically pleasing to dump variable values into result screens, its often the easiest thing to do in early development. All controller instance variables are available to the view, so if you want to see what they contain, you can just write something like:

to display the contents of @student. However, if the object has much complexity and isnt just a string, it will insert something like:

3. Using HTML Within Flex-Based Apollo Applications

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

Apollo gives developers a brand new way to integrate HTML rendering into desktop applications. Apollo's new HTML functionality includes the ability to:

Load and render complete web pages (HTML and XHTML) from local and remote URLs as well as a string.

Access and manipulate the full Document Object Model (DOM).

Call JavaScript functions and reference JavaScript objects from within your ActionScript code, and vice versa.

Arrange the Flex HTML component in your application interface as you would any other Flex UI component.

Graphically alter the HTMLControl object or Flex HTML component as you would any Sprite or DisplayObject in ActionScript.

The new flash.html.HTMLControl class handles the core HTML loading, rendering, and script execution duties. Based on the HTMLControl class, the new Flex HTML component integrates the same HTML rendering power into the Flex UI framework.

An application with simple HTML rendering or web browsing needs can use the Flex HTML component with little or no ActionScript coding. Of course, more complex requirements will call for additional coding in either ActionScript or JavaScript.
