The Land

Slice ePub May 25, 2014

Bermuda, a tiny collection of rocks in the Atlantic Ocean some 580 miles due east of CapeHatteras, is isolated. Even so, this group of British islands is one of the most popular tourist resorts in the Western Hemisphere. On most maps, if it shows at all, it's no more than a tiny dot. Close up, Bermuda looks somewhat like a fishhook, with the curve at the southwest end and the stem extending to the northeast.

The flight in over the island is incredible. The view is never quite what you expect. The sparkling blue waters seen around any tropical island are mixed with eye-catching colors. Homes and shops painted pastel shades of pink, blue, green, yellow and other colors of the rainbow sit anchored under snowy white roofs. The effect is a patchwork quilt, thrown down on a field of green in the middle of the blue ocean.

Bermuda rests on the peaks of a volcanic mountain that rises steeply from the ocean floor to a point some 200 feet below the surface. Above this level, the islands consist mainly of limestone formed by seashells and corals. Along the shores rise huge rocks, sculpted by the action of the wind and water into improbable pinnacles, pillars and grottoes. The reefs surrounding the islands are made of coral, and the Bermudian archipelago is the northernmost point on the planet that supports its growth.

6. Dates and Times—New API

Source: Java Cookbook
Slice ePub August 20, 2014

Developers suffered for a decade and a half under the inconsistencies and ambiguities of the
Date
class from Java 1.0 and its replacement-wannabe, the
Calendar
class from Java 1.1. Several alternative "
Date
replacement” packages emerged, including the simple and sensible Date4J and the more comprehensive Joda-Time package. Java 8 introduced a new, consistent, and well-thought-out package for date and time handling, under the aegis of the Java Community Process, JSR-310, shepherded by Stephen Colbourne, based on his earlier package Joda-Time, but with several important design changes.[26] This package is biased toward “ISO 8601” dates; the default format is, for example, 2015-10-23T10:22:45. But it can, of course, work with other calendar schemes.

One of the key benefits of the new API is that it provides useful operations such as adding/subtracting dates/times. Much time was wasted by developers using the previous APIs re-implementing these over and over. That said, millions of lines of code are based on the old APIs, so we review them briefly, and consider interfacing the new API to legacy code, in the final recipe of this chapter, Interfacing with Legacy Date and Calendar Classes.

22 What to do in Emergencies

Slice PDF May 18, 2014

Chapter twenty-two

what to do in emergencies

T

his topic was the birthing idea for this book. In January of 1993, my brother fell ill and my family was not only unsure how to contact me— they did not know the procedure to follow so that I might attend his funeral after he died. This hurt my family and myself deeply, that I could not be there to receive and give comfort. The Texas prison system places many conditions on this type of furlough, but it is allowed. But in such a situation, time is of the essence. If you want to get your relative out in time to see his dying mother, or to attend a memorial service for his daughter, then you must follow TDCJ guidelines, especially the guidelines that specify the people authorized to contact TDCJ with the details of a situation.

For TDCJ officials, this is an issue loaded with problems. Most state officials are sincerely sorry when tragedy befalls the family members of convicts and they do not want to seem heartless. However, security is a priority, and the system cannot allow just anyone to call and say, “John
See more

Chapter Thirteen: Holiday from Psychoanalysis: As August Approaches

Slice ePub November 15, 2014

The English winter, ending in July,

To recommence in August

—Byron, “Don Juan”

We will grieve not, rather find

Strength in what remains behind…

In the soothing thoughts that spring

Out of human suffering…

In years that bring the philosophic mind.

—William Wordsworth, “Intimations of Immortality” (1807)

As an aging analyst I can sense, as August approaches, some increase in anxiety, sadness, and weariness—some grieving—at the prospect of separation from my patients. Alongside this is an awareness of what Wordsworth (ibid.), expressing resolution in relation to the passing of childhood and youth, calls “the philosophic mind”, which can usually put loss and change into perspective. And so I can look forward to a long and active vacation, as well as a relief from (analytic) year-end weariness. The analyst also frequently faces the prospect of a long August separation with some feeling of increased sadness, due partly to the (sometimes prolonged) onslaught of the patients’ hostility towards his departure and the patients’ (and the analyst’s) varied reactions to that hostility.
