The Holy Father had always been an admirer of the saints and blesseds of the Catholic Church. So many people, he believed, could be inspired in the daily living of their own lives by the example of these holy persons.

Over the years, the pope proclaimed 1,338 persons blessed (the step before sainthood) and canonized 482 saints—the greatest number of any pope in history. These holy witnesses were from all over the world, spoke a wide variety of languages, and came from different cultures. They each had a particular lesson to offer. The pope realized that people could pray to God through the intercession of these holy men, women, and children to seek the help and guidance they needed.

Pope John Paul also declared the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. That was a celebration of the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus. Previously, in 1988, the pope had proclaimed a Marian Year in honor of the Blessed Mother.

Pope John Paul II began World Youth Day, a gathering of young people held every two years in a different country. He also initiated the World Day of the Sick, celebrated every year on February 11, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

A. Installation

David Pogue O'Reilly Media ePub

If your computer came with Lion already installed on it, you can skip this appendixfor now. But if youre running an earlier version of the Mac OS and want to savor the Lion experience, this appendix describes how to install the new operating system on your Mac.

As youll soon discover, the process isnt quite like any other operating system youve installed before. You cant buy Lion in a box, or on a DVD; youre supposed to download it from the Mac App Store.

There are some very attractive elements to the download-only system. For example, theres no copy protection and no serial numbers to type in. You dont have to pay extra for multiple copies; your one-time $30 covers as many Macs as you own. (In other words, theres no Family Plan for Lion.)

And theres no disc to hunt down later, when you want to install Lion again (onto a new Mac, for example). And when you do need a copy again, youll download the latest version10.7.3 or whatever it isinstead of having to install the updates that have come out since you got your DVD.

CHAPTER SEVEN. Evaluating spiritual and mystical experiences: from identification to possession—myths of the hero/saviour and of the Devil

Margaret Clark Karnac Books ePub

“The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan answered the Lord, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.’”

(The Bible: Job, 1:7)

We sometimes identify our ego with one aspect of our personality. In some cases, this can lead to a trance-like state of contemplation. A man reported to his therapist what he called “a religious experience” in looking at Michelangelo’s statues of “The Sleepers”, four separate large stone blocks, each with a man’s form partly carved out of it (or being found within it). As he saw them, each man seems to be partly imprisoned in the stone, partly struggling to wake up or to get free. The statues are sometimes also called “The Prisoners”. It is not known whether they are unfinished, or whether their unresolved state is what Michelangelo had intended. The therapist thought that this man had seen his own struggle to become conscious externalized in the statues, and had entered an “out of time” state of profound self-contemplation. He was woken from his trance by an attendant telling him the gallery was about to close.

4. Number and the human sciences

John Rickman Karnac Books ePub

Suppose one of those of t-spoken-of but seldom-met travellers from Mars had visited us to satisfy his native curiosity about psychology: he would find a state of affairs that might at first seem somewhat puzzling. In the write-up of his field work he would report on one-person psychology, two-person psychology, three-person psychology, possibly a four-person psychology, and a multi-person psychology; what would strike him most would of course be the interrelation of those aspects of the subject.

“The break-up of the whole field of psychology into categories according to the minimum number of persons essential to the study of each branch of the subject is the first thing that strikes the visitor”, he might write in his thesis, adding that distressing confusions sometimes occurred because these simple categories were thought to be irrelevant to the study of detail by the practitioners of each category and the Implications so disconcerting that they were generally ignored.

6. The consultant’s cognitive processes in practice: When two consultants work together

How I learned to be an organizational consultant

Consultants are practitioners, and we carry out our activities through direct and indirect communication. The activities take place through many types of actions, in which we present our theories, methods, and reflections to others. Language, meaning, and action are the key areas about which we ourselves also continue to learn.

The issue I want to address here is how I, as a psychologist and a consultant, developed this competence.

When looking back at the years that I have practised as an organizational consultant, I have been in frequent contact with other consultants—consultants who, like me, work as external consultants or as internal consultants (human resources consultants or educational consultants). As a person, I am extrovert, seek contact with others, am action-oriented, and want to test my ideas and learn new things. I prefer challenges, change, inspiration, and creative tasks. My work needs to be meaningful and to present opportunities for self-development I have always had a strong interest in and identification with my profession.
