6.3. Software Versus Hardware

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

RAID arrays are commonly implemented by host software or by a dedicated hardware array controller. Of course, the hardware RAID vendors will tell you that their hardware controllers are better, and software companies will tell you that their software products are better; although they accomplish the same function, they do have some substantial differences.

In software-based array management, the underlying physical disks are visible to the administrator, and the RAID functions are implemented via a virtual device driver. The bonus is flexibility: the RAID functionality can use any available drive, regardless of packaging or location. Arbitrary location of disks can be useful if you are trying to build an array that is resistant to systematic faults (e.g., fire or flood). One of the common criticisms of such a design is that it is slower than controller-based RAID, especially for the parity computations involved in RAID 5. While it is true that software-based arrays tend to be slower than hardware-based arrays, it is not a function of parity computational performance; a typical array controller is equivalent to a 66 MHz Intel 486 processor, which can perform eight parity computations in about fifteen cycles. A modern high-performance workstation microprocessor can complete two parity computations in every clock cycle, and has a clock rate eight times higher! In addition, the load imposed on the system for the parity computation is trivial.
See more

All database systems make provisions for embedding literal values in SQL statements. Text and numeric literals are usually quite simple, but there are some nuances of which you should be aware. Date and time literals tend to be more complex.

The ISO SQL standard for text literals is to enclose them in single quotes:

Use two adjacent single quotes when you need to embed a single quote in a string:

SQL will treat the two adjacent single quotes as a single quote within the literal:

Oracle Database 10g and higher allow you to specify alternative quoting delimiters, which are always two characters and always include leading and trailing single quotes. Introduce delimiters by prefacing them with a
Q
or a
q
. For example, to use
'[
and
]'
as delimiters, specify:

The
(
,
[
, and
{
characters are special cases in that their corresponding closing delimiters must be
)
,
]
, and
}
, respectively. Otherwise, use the same character to close the string that you use to open it:
See more

7. Man Swallows Goldfish while Sleepwalking, Chokes to Death

man swallows goldfish while sleepwalking, chokes to death

M

y wife’s family cornered the market on strange death. They invented the concept. They hold the freaking patent. To look up my wife’s family tree is to see twisted branches filled with decapitations, puddle drownings, impalements, accidental hangings, circus animal attacks. You name it, it’s killed them. Her own mother—God strike me dead if I’m lying—died from a sneeze. That’s right. She sneezed and she died. I’ve seen the death certificate. Under “Cause of Death,” the doctor wrote:

Coronary failure due to sudden, extreme, involuntary expulsion of air through nasal passage. Which is a nice way of saying you died from a sneeze.

Of course, Susan never mentioned any of this to me before we got married. She seemed normal enough. There wasn’t a dark cloud following her around wherever she went. She didn’t have the Number of the Beast birthmarked behind her ear. Okay, so she was a bit uptight around the edges. She drove too slow, for one, hands always padlocked safely to the wheel in the 2 o’clock and 10 o’clock positions. But what woman isn’t uptight? What woman doesn’t drive too slow? Even when I visited her family— which boiled down to a couple of hefty aunts, an uncle, and two unmarried sisters—I never suspected a thing. We’d sit around the coffee table, speaking flawless in-law at each other. “Soooo,” her
See more

See more
