Chapter 4: Red-Hot Rivalry

Slice PDF May 13, 2014

The Aggies were 8–0 when they met

John David Crow

Before he was a football star, John

David Crow was a fan. “Doak Walker was my idol when I was in junior high,” Crow said. Walker played for

Southern Methodist and Crow wanted to follow him there. By the time Crow was in his senior year of high school, though, he decided to go to Texas

A&M. The reason was that coaching master Bear Bryant was there.

“I knew he’d be building and that I could learn faster under him, because he’d be concentrating on the freshmen,” Crow said. “In fact, we had such a good freshman team that we beat the varsity.”

By the time Crow was a senior at

Texas A&M in 1957, he was the talk of the country. The 6-foot-2, 217-pound running back won the Heisman

Trophy. And by then, Bryant was a fan of Crow’s. “Crow is the greatest back I ever coached,” said Bryant, who later set coaching records in a great career at Alabama.

Texas in 1941. But Texas won that game

23–0. It was a frustrating era for Aggies fans. Their biggest rival had just ended their national title dreams two seasons in a row. And more frustration was soon to come.

I hope this book has answered your questions, solved a few concrete problems, and provided a slew of useful information. However, since even a wide-ranging book can’t cover every possible topic, I’d like to share some useful links for online sources and discussion forums where you can gather more information about your camera system.
(I have my own Q&A section in this forum.)

Your camera saves a wealth of information in your RAW and JPEG files about your exposure settings as EXIF (Exchangeable Image File) metadata. To access the metadata as well as a lot of information specific to individual vendors (i.e., Maker Notes), such as the camera serial number, date of manufacture, dynamic range extension, film simulation, etc., and to read this information on your computer, it’s advisable to use an image viewing or editing program that relies on the utility ExifTool.

Figure7-1.The external camera controls

The D5000 has 23 separate Custom Settings, a1 through f5. Theyre designed to allow personalized configuration of the camera. This will be an extensive chapter because we have so many settings to cover in detail.

Combining these custom menu settings with the Shooting Menu functions covered in the previous chapter helps make your D5000 a very personal device that is customizable to your particular style of shooting. Few cameras have this level of complexity or power, and for many users the default settings will suffice. However, all this is available for your own personal customization based on your needs, so lets explore these settings step-by-step.

Keep this book in your camera bag so that youll have a reference point for future adjustments to the D5000. Youll need it!

Figure7-2.The Custom Setting Menu

Well be using the external camera controls to set various functions as we proceed through this chapter (see Figure7-1).

Referring to the numbers on the screens in Figure7-1, here is a list of the control names:
