3. DIY Scientific Publishing

Inc. O'Reilly Media O'Reilly Media ePub

Joshua Nicholson

To publish is to make something known or to disseminate it to the public. With the advent of the Internet, publishing has become very easy to do. Nowadays, anyone can set up a website or blog and publish their work and ideas immediately and freely. Indeed, literally millions of people and organizations do just that every day and every hour. The ability to publish so easily, coupled with the ability to disseminate publications through various social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, means that you can write something on your couch and a few hours later have it be seen by millions of people. This may not be easy, but it is certainly possible. Because of this, the publishing industry has dramatically changed over recent years. Indeed, we are in a time when there are more independent publishers (bloggers) than there are publishing organizations. What can publishers offer writers that they can’t really do themselves? Not much, and because of this, publishing, in short, has for the most part become do-it-yourself, except in science. Why?

Chapter 6 : Writing

Steve Gladis HRD Press, Inc. PDF

Early in the writing process you did some writing, remember? You freewrote or freespoke—fastwriting techniques that help you get your ideas on paper quickly—to find out what you knew about your topic. Well, now you’re going to do it all over again, only this time with the benefit of some notes on what you learned from others about the topic. This step of the writing process integrates what you know already with the information you’ve learned while hunting. In this chapter you’ll learn how to organize your notes, how to use your preliminary outline, how to refine your thesis, and how to write freely with new information.

In the Hunting step you tested the waters of opinion and knowledge: you found out what others had to say about your topic. No doubt you’ve accumulated a pile of notecards or notesheets for your efforts. So now what? Well, now you need to sort out the information so you can use it wisely in a draft.

Begin by reading each of your slug lines and placing each card in a specific pile. Remember that key-word list you made, that

CHAPTER FOUR: The method

Ira Steinman Karnac Books ePub

The psychiatric literature over the last forty years has increasingly emphasised the efficacy of antipsychotic medication and supportive psychotherapy, psychiatric day care and halfway houses in the treatment of schizophrenia. It is often felt that individual psychotherapy is of little or no use; cognitive therapy, antipsychotic medication, group therapy, psychiatric day care, and training in social skills are often the only care offered. Advocates of an intensive, psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy find themselves on the defensive and are told that the burden of proof is on them to demonstrate that this approach works.

In the hope of generating some fruitful discussion and inquiry into the possibility that there are some schizophrenics and delusional people who respond to an insight-oriented, relatively drug-free, outpatient psychotherapy, I'd like to present twelve case studies—some long, some short—of the successful long-term intensive sychotherapy of schizophrenia and delusional states. These cases demonstrate the usefulness in a primarily outpatient, minimal medication setting, of an intensive, psychoanalytically oriented exploratory psychotherapy of schizophrenia and delusional states. Such a psychotherapy isbuilt upon the cornerstones of a belief in unconscious motivation, the existence of transference, countertransference and resistance in the course of psychotherapy, and the benefits of interpretations of these factors aimed at promoting insight, change and growth.

25. Go Forth and Do Data Science

Joel Grus O'Reilly Media ePub

And now, once again, I bid my hideous progeny go forth and prosper.

Mary Shelley

Where do you go from here? Assuming I haven’t scared you off of data science, there are a number of things you should learn next.

We mentioned IPython earlier in the book. It provides a shell with far more functionality than the standard Python shell, and it adds “magic functions” that allow you to (among other things) easily copy and paste code (which is normally complicated by the combination of blank lines and whitespace formatting) and run scripts from within the shell.

Mastering IPython will make your life far easier. (Even learning just a little bit of IPython will make your life a lot easier.)

Additionally, it allows you to create “notebooks” combining text, live Python code, and visualizations that you can share with other people, or just keep around as a journal of what you did (Figure 25-1).

Throughout this book, we dabbled in linear algebra (Chapter 4), statistics (Chapter 5), probability (Chapter 6), and various aspects of machine learning.
