You can get pretty far in R just using vectors. Thats what Chapter2 is all about. This chapter moves beyond vectors to recipes for matrices, lists, factors, and data frames. If you have preconceptions about data structures, I suggest you put them aside. R does data structures differently.

If you want to study the technical aspects of Rs data structures, I suggest reading R in a Nutshell (OReilly) and the R Language Definition. My notes here are more informal. These are things I wish Id known when I started using R.

Here are some key properties of vectors:

All elements of a vector must have the same type or, in R terminology, the same mode.

So
v[2]
refers to the second element of
v
.

So
v[c(2,3)]
is a subvector of
v
that consists of the second and third elements.

Vectors have a
names
property, the same length as the vector itself, that gives names to the elements:

Continuing the previous example:

Options

The Publish Options page allows you to further customize your application (see

Figure 1-12).

Figure 1-12. Additional publishing options

For example, suppose you have localized your application in different languages.

By default, your application will be distributed using the default language. To publish the localized versions of your application, you need to specify the language by selecting the “Publish language” from the drop-down menu. Once you’ve selected a language, the appropriate satellite assembly and resources will be downloaded when the user installs the application.

Configuring ClickOnce Security

An application that uses ClickOnce runs under Full Trust by default. Under Full

Trust, the application has unrestricted access to resources such as files and the registry, as well as the network. This potentially can be dangerous, as it opens the possibility of your code being exploited by malicious code. To prevent this, use

Code Access Security to limit the permissions for your application to only what is necessary.
