The development of a regional polity in the Terminal Formative period (150 BC–AD 250) was inevitably a process that involved people throughout the lower Río Verde Valley (Figure 1.2). For those living in the many midsize and small sites that dotted the valley, the development and maintenance of regional political structures would have created new opportunities and challenges. The expansion of Río Viejo as a political center resulted in regional population movements (Joyce 2005, 2008; Joyce et al., Chapter 5); new economic demands were placed on populations valley-wide (Joyce 2010, 191; Levine, Chapter 8); social and political hierarchies changed as the political authority of Río Viejo’s elites expanded (Joyce 2005, 2008, 2010); and ceremonial activities and responsibilities would have shifted with the construction and use of monumental ritual spaces at Río Viejo (Barber and Joyce 2007; Joyce 2005, 2008; 2010, 186–195; Joyce and Barber 2011; Joyce et al., Chapter 5). The manner in which such social changes played out, however, was a result not simply of dictates emanating from Río Viejo, but rather emerged from negotiations between regional political authorities and local populations (Barber 2005; Barber and Joyce 2007; Joyce 2008, 2010).

The House of Sacrifice


There were around thirty-­five teens, two chaperones, a man who was in charge of the construction, and a lady. It was nonstop hard labor for many hours for all of us, a level of labor which I was not accustomed to doing. We had to demolish cabinets, rip out tile, and move a tremendous amount of rock under the scorching sun. I started to regret volunteering. I just wanted to be sitting in my air-­conditioned home instead.

After finishing the work we were asked to do, we gathered in the front yard. The man in charge thanked us for our help and then asked the lady to speak. We found out then that she was the prospective owner of the house. She was so appreciative of our help with her future home, that she started crying. It was at that point that I realized what sacrifice can do. The numerous hours that we sacrificed in the hot sun were for a person. I realized that since Jesus

Christ sacrificed his life for us, then I can sacrifice something to help my brothers and sisters. My experience taught me the importance of service, and augmented my faith by widening my appreciation of

Abstract - This paper presents a didactical experience taking place at 2012 in a Calculus I course with 24 college students.

The scenario, including the simulation of uniformly accelerated motion over a straight line, is analyzed through a dynamical software. Additional to the simulation, SimCalc educational software allows the graphical interplay between velocity and position graphs, and through this visual perception, the emergence of prediction questions about the motion are promoted. Students should deal with them making use of algebraic and numeric procedures related to linear and quadratic equations. Results make us believe in the potential for the learning of calculus of a new way to deal with the visual perception of graphs, as tools for the mathematical reasoning involving numerical, algebraic and graphical representations of functions involved with the visualization of the motion scenario.
