CHAPTER FIFTEEN: Behind closed doors: what analysts say to one another about the practice of psychoanalysis

Slice ePub May 23, 2014

Richard R. Hansen

Although I am a psychologist, my primary professional identity is that of a psychoanalyst. As a psychoanalyst, I limit my practice to working with patients whom I see three or more times per week. Only one of the above statements is true.

Your nervous laughter reveals your anxious relief that you are not alone in your concern that you are seeing more and more patients that, for a variety of reasons, cannot or will not, engage in the session frequency that has been fundamental to our training and practice as psychoanalysts. Your laughter also reflects, as Freud (1905c) was first to note in Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious, the spontaneous release associated with the rapid lifting of a repression. I tickled your unconscious when I barged past your defences and said something publicly that we may rarely acknowledge, even in our private moments, something that may even be considered taboo. The fact is that few, if any, of us practice psychoanalysis in the way in which we were trained, and in the way in which we prefer to work. This has serious consequences for our perception of ourselves as psychoanalysts, for our patients, and for our theory building.

15. Christmas in France

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

15

Christmas in France

Finally, at the orders of Arendt Van Corlaer, Father Isaac was smuggled onto a small ship that carried him down the Hudson River to New Amsterdam (the area that is now New York).

Father Isaac enjoyed his newfound freedom and the company of the Dutch who rejoiced over their own victory against the Iroquois. General Willem Kieft, the director of New Amsterdam, welcomed Isaac to his house and dressed him in a new black suit and cloak. The Dutch colonists looked upon Isaac with curiosity and admiration. His story was told in every home, over every teacup.

Toward the end of October, an old ship prepared to leave New Amsterdam for Europe.

“Father Isaac,” General Kieft invited, “you’re free to leave on this ship if you wish. I want to warn you, however, that it is hardly seaworthy.”

“Sir, I place my life in God’s hands,” Isaac replied. “The Lord has spared me until now; I am confident he will bring me safely home.”

Due to the small size of the ship, the voyage was rough. Sufferings were not lacking to Father Isaac. He slept on the upper deck among the coils of rope at the mercy of the waves and wind that swept over him.

50. Balanced Scorecard

Slice PDF May 14, 2014

50 john antos

Balanced Scorecard

Managing strategy is synonymous with managing change.

—Robert Kaplan and David Norton

Handling Bags

Think about the following Southwest Airlines baggage handler, then ask yourself if you want to change your organization to have performance measures that support your organization’s goals.

When asked, this baggage handler responded clearly and quickly about his performance measures to load baggage:

1. Quickly, so planes depart on time, helping to ensure passenger happiness and repeat business.

2. Carefully, so baggage is undamaged, saving money and helping to keep our customers happy.

3. Correctly, so baggage gets to the correct destination, keeping passengers happy and saving the cost of tracking and delivering lost baggage.1

We asked numerous senior executives to survey their employees to determine if they knew how they contributed to organizational goals and strategy. Most said they did not need to survey because they knew their employees did not have a clear idea on how they contributed to the organization’s goals and strategies. Many said even those who reported directly to them did not understand the strategies for achieving the organizational goals. Some found performance measures that were contradictory to the organizational goals and strategies. Their employees were not all rowing in the same direction. Some of their employees were not even in the same river.
