As I write this, http://php.net/quickref.php lists 3,917 functions, which account for many language constructs that behave like functions. Rather than distinguish between the two, I have chosen to treat them all as functions.

With such a large list, I can't possibly begin to recommend the most appropriate and secure use of each. Instead, I have chosen the ones that I think require the most attention. My choices are based upon the frequency with which each is used, the amount of risk (or protection) associated with their use, and my own experience.

For each function listed, I provide a recommendation regarding its use. While making this recommendation, I consider security to be paramount. Adjust this approach as necessary to best fit your own needs.

When a function has the same risks as another, a reference is made to the other function rather than offering a redundant explanation.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS, recent advances in biotechnology, and global democratization are propelling us into the biopolitical era. As we make the transition to this new era, business will play new leadership roles and assume new responsibilities. Here we focus on the qualities and responsibilities of our corporate leaders as they move out of the Second Wave to take on their global tasks in the biopolitical arena.

Biopolitics has been defined as the exercise of control over the future of life (Rifkin 1983, 237). As a type of politics, it is an amalgam of the usual elements of politics—power, connection, and uncertainty (Anderson 1987)—set in a wider context. In biopolitics, power is the ability to produce change in ecosystems as well as in corporate headquarters, city hall, or Washington. Connection refers to networks, or circles of personal contacts. In a biopolitical context, these go beyond people to reflect the ecological law that “everything is connected to everything else,” that humans are connected to other living things and to living systems. Uncertainty is a feature of all forms of politics, since humans are free beings and hence unpredictable. As conditions in the world’s ecosystems become more stressed, uncertainty grows, making decision making more difficult at the very time when it is becoming more urgent.

Press the button, and you’re finished. Not because all of the variables of exposure are entrusted to some incomprehensible automatic system, but because the functions of the camera have been reduced to the basic essentials. This type of technology has experienced a renaissance in the film photography scene. Near the center of this interest are two much beloved cameras from Asian manufacturers: HOLGA and DIANA. They were originally developed as cameras for the masses so people of modest means would have access to affordable photography. These cameras have plastic cases that are remarkable because they are so lightweight, and you can figure out how to use them quickly because of their spartan functions and features.

Surely no one imagined that these cameras would gain international fame. However, a Viennese company with the trademark Lomography, who had already rescued the Russian Lomo camera from its deathbed and helped it rise to a new success, also recognized the potential of these likable cameras—HOLGA and DIANA—from the Far East. They were soon included in the company’s product line. This is how they became ennobled as one of the tools of the likable and fun photography of Lomography, whose philosophy is described in 10 rules. The last rule especially pleases me: “Don’t worry about any rules”—a sentiment that should be applied to all photography in general. Many, many excellent photographs have been taken because photographers have resisted conservative rules.

What do you want to be known for?

What kind of employer do you want to connect with?

These two questions capture the essence of what branding is all about: image and connection. Think of your brand as a uniquely individual image with a magnet attached to it. What unique combination of skills or competencies do people recognize in you? Why do people in the work world trust you? What do you want to contribute to your world of work? What kind of employer will be drawn to, connect with, and pay a premium for that?

Perhaps you’re thinking, “I don’t need a brand…I just need to land a job!” You might be surprised to learn that a brand will help you land a job because many of the same dynamics behind why a consumer chooses Crest over Colgate also apply in hiring.
