E. Quick Reference

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

This class is responsible for maintaining a set of keys and their related owners. In the default implementation, this class maintains the .keystore file held in the users home directory, but you may provide an alternate implementation of this class that holds keys anywhere: in a database, or on a remote filesystem, or on a Java smart card, or any and all of the above. The class that is used to provide the default keystore implementation is specified by the keystore property in the $JDKHOME/lib/ file. The keystore may optionally require a passphrase for access to the entire keystore (via the load() method); this passphrase is often used only for sanity checking and is often not specified at all. On the other hand, private keys in the keystore should be protected (e.g., encrypted) by using a different passphrase for each private key.

Note that although the keystore associates entities with keys, it does not rely on the Identity class itself.

CHAPTER ELEVEN: Authenticity and anxiety

Slice ePub May 22, 2014

Authenticity and anxiety

If an object is described as authentic, it is taken to be genuine and real. If buying a particular brand of watch from a shop, I might ask if it is an authentically made watch by the manufacturers it claims to be from. In order to test this, I may look at an example of one I know already to be genuine. If asked to look at a painting and provide an opinion as to whether it was painted by a particular artist, an expert would be expected to have studied other works by the same artist known to be authentic with a strong provenance. Is it an authentic Picasso, Rembrandt, or Cezanne? To test the painting’s authenticity, as with the example of the watch, there must be a comparable and original template. In essence, this template is the “true” and authentic example against which comparisons are made. When we consider the authenticity of what it is to be human, however, it is not possible to find a definitive template. There may be people we admire or look up to, but there is no quintessential human being. There may be habits, behaviours, and actions about which we may feel more proud than others, but none of them is more authentically “us” than any other. In different places and under differing circumstances, every child will act and behave differently. At school, they may be described as very well behaved and well liked, but at home the same child may act in a frequently aggressive or violent manner. No one state or pattern of behaviour is more authentic than any other. They are simply two aspects of the same child.

23. Building Android Apps

Slice ePub May 27, 2014

There are two ways to view Flash-developed content on Android devices like the HTC One smartphones or Motorola Xoom tablets. The old-fashioned way is to use the devices web browser to display Flash content thats embedded in the web page. The up-and-coming way is to develop an application using AIR for Android, and thats the focus of this chapter. (For a comparison of installed apps versus web-based animations, see the box on AIR for Android vs. Flash Player.)

You can use all your animation and ActionScript skills to build apps for Android devices, but there are differences between mobile apps and web-based or desktop apps. For example, in an app youll want to include touchscreen gestures. If your app is destined for smaller smartphone screens, you need to make your buttons large, and the text and images readable. Take a look back at Chapter22which explains how to create apps for Apples iOSeven if you plan to focus on Android. That chapters details on using code snippets to add touchscreen gestures, for example, also applies to Android.

CHAPTER FOUR: Adolescence as a dynamic field

Slice ePub May 25, 2014

Luis Kancyper

“In brief, it is exciting that adolescence has become vocal and active, but the adolescent striving that makes itself felt over the whole world today needs to be met, needs to be given reality by an act of confrontation.

Confrontation must be personal.

Adults are needed if adolescents are to have life and liveliness. Confrontation belongs to containment that is non-retaliatory, without vindictiveness, but having its own strength.

[…] Let the young alter society and teach grown-ups how to see the world afresh; but, where there is challenge of the growing boy or girl, there let an adult meet the challenge. And it will not necessarily be nice. In the unconscious fantasy these are matters of life and death”.

D.W. Winnicott (1972); G. Rosolato (1981)

The confrontation between generations is an essential process for the acquisition of identity.

Its main condition is the presence of neither a soft nor arbitrary other who allows the tension of difference between opposites, while both parts admit that being an opponent is not equivalent to being an enemy.
