Networks are awesome. Once youve got a home or office network, you can copy files from one machine to anothereven between Windows PCs and Macsjust as youd drag files between folders on your own Mac. You can send little messages to other peoples screens. Everyone on the network can consult the same database or calendar, or listen to the same iTunes music collection. You can play games over the network. You can share a single printer or cable modem among all the Macs in the office. You can connect to the network from wherever you are in the world, using the Internet as the worlds longest extension cord back to your office.
In OS X, you can even do screen sharing, which means that you, the wise computer whiz, can see whats on the screen of your pathetic, floundering relative or buddy elsewhere on the network. You can seize control of the other Macs mouse and keyboard. You can troubleshoot, fiddle with settings, and so on. Freud came up with a particular form of therapy called psychoanalysis, which was and continues to be a particular form of thinking about the workings of our minds. To a considerable extent he was able to elucidate something of the sexual aspects not only of the “innocence” of our childhoods, but so often on the basis of an examination of our dream life, he arrived at his foundational emphasis on the unconscious forces or drives that influence our everyday thoughts and actions. And this emphasis was founded on the sexual. Inevitably other thinkers in the field demurred, Jung for example wanting to place spirituality at the heart of our being. More recently and perhaps more interestingly the French cultural theorist Baudrillard joined the queue of those ultimately more dismissive of the potential reductionism in the thesis that the basis of our being is sexual. For Baudrillard seduction is the key.
Nevertheless let us pursue the idea, so incontrovertibly associated with Freud, that there is something that he sought to call sexuality at the heart of everything. Not so much in terms of whether this is true or not, but as a rhetorical device, as something that would promote a thinking. Or more importantly an enjoyment. Although much has been written in psychoanalytic literature about the analyst's waiting room, most writing has focused on suggestions about the physical setup and arrangement of the room and its impact on the patient (e.g., Sugarman, Nemiroff, & Greenson, 1992; Goldstein, 1998; Armstrong, 2000; Hollender & Ford, 2000; Akhtar, 2009a).
Freud's writings include two descriptions of his observations about patients who expressed powerful wishes and conflicts through the way in which they negotiated their entry into his office. In the first, he writes (Freud, 1917):
I have had the ordinary door between my waiting room and my consulting and treatment room doubled and given a baize lining. There can be no doubt about the purpose of this arrangement. Now it constantly happens that a person whom I have brought in from the waiting room omits to shut the door behind him and almost always he leaves both doors open. As soon as I notice this I insist in a rather unfriendly tone on his or her going back and making good the omission—even if the person concerned is a well-dressed gentleman or a fashionable lady. This makes an impression of uncalled-for pedantry—for anyone who behaves like this and leaves the door open between a doctor's waiting room and consulting room is ill mannered and deserves an unfriendly reception. But do not take sides over this till you have heard the sequel. For this carelessness on the part of the patient only occurs when he has been alone in the waiting room and has therefore left an empty room behind him; it never happens if other people, strangers to him, have been waiting with him. In this latter case he knows quite well that it is in his interest not to be overheard while he is talking to the doctor, and he never fails to shut both the doors carefully.See All Chapters

This chapter discusses some of the techniques you can use to apply a scripting system to the problem of game AI, and the benefits you can reap from doing this. At its most basic level, you can think of scripting as a very simple programming language tailored to a specific task related to the game in question. Scripting can be an integral part of the game development process, as it enables the game designers rather than the game programmers to write and refine much of the game mechanics. Players also can use scripting to create or modify their own game worlds or levels. Taken a step further, you can use a scripting system in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORG) to alter the game behavior while the game is actually being played.
You can take several approaches when implementing a scripting system. A sophisticated scripting system might interface an already existing scripting language, such as Lua or Python, for example, with the actual game engine. Some games create a proprietary scripting language designed for the needs of the individual game. Although it’s sometimes beneficial to use those methods, it’s easier to have the game parse standard text files containing the scripting commands. Employing this approach, you can create scripts using any standard text editor. In a real game, the scripts can be read in and parsed when the game first starts, or at some other specified time. For example, scripts that control creatures or events in a dungeon can be read in and parsed when the player actually enters the dungeon area.See All Chapters
