Two What Is Brain-Compatible Curriculum?

Curriculum is the road map for learning. Designing curriculum for students of the 21st century is no easy feat, for several reasons. First, as we noted in chapter 1, many students do not find school to be an interesting or challenging environment. Second, students come to school today with a different set of expectations about learning than students did just fifteen years ago. Third, schools are being asked to provide more of the services that used to be provided in the home. Fourth, students who understand how to learn are likely to be more successful in life than those who just amass information.

For these four reasons alone, educational leaders need to continually review what is being taught in schools. They need to determine the extent that current curricula can prepare students to be successful in a world where change is constant, technology plays an increasingly larger role, and most people will have up to ten different careers over a lifetime (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010). To make sound judgments about an appropriate curriculum, we have to look at what students expect of their school experiences.

I used to work at a consulting firm that specialized in toy design. I was the chief engineer and produced 20 to 30 complete prototype (read: hacked) toys per year. One of my favorite projects was hacking radio-controlled

(RC) cars.

Radio-controlled cars and trucks are ideal toys for hacking. They’re cheap, easily disassembled, and provide a lot of hacking opportunities. For example, you can create a small, autonomous robot; a robot that chases the family cat; a light-following vehicle; or a radio-controlled (RC) car that responds to commands sent from your TV’s IR remote control.

In this hack, I’ll show you how to hack an RC car to make it play laser tag.

Instead of simply racing, the cars can shoot at one another, inflicting and sustaining damage with every hit. To build this hack, you will equip two off-the-shelf RC cars with a microprocessor, a radio link, an IR transmitter, and an IR receiver.

1 Understanding the Importance of RTI

As educators and researchers have learned more about how students learn and the instructional practices that have the greatest positive effect on learning, laws have been modified to reflect those perceived best practices. The quest for higher achievement and fewer gaps among groups of students has led legislatures to look for alternatives to the procedures used in the past for identifying children with learning disabilities. Let’s examine some of the legislation affecting response to intervention and the policy shifts that have led to the creation of RTI models.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA, Public Law 89-10) was enacted in 1965, and the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA, Public Law 94-142) was passed in 1975. As the introduction noted, prior to that time, students with disabilities were often turned away from enrolling in public schools under the excuse that schools were not prepared to teach them. These laws gave all children the opportunity to a free and appropriate education and put the burden of providing appropriate modifications on the schools. Over the years, the intent of these laws has been clarified through reauthorization and new legislation, in particular the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004).

Chapter 1 Melanie Klein’s Vision of Projective Identification

Although her earlier work had borne the stamp of an emphasis on the concreteness of psychic reality and thus of internalized objects (the structural elements of the Superego), and established that the mechanisms of defense were implemented by unconscious phantasies, it was not until the 1946 paper on schizoid mechanisms that Melanie Klein embanked on a path that clearly distinguished her work from Freud’s, following a direction already indicated by Abraham’s “Short Study of the Libido”. While she never abandoned the distinction between Life and Death Instincts, her methods of description moved more and more away from differentiating between ego and id in clinical phenomena in favour of talking of the Self. This was ushered in by the description of splitting processes, in which parts of the self not only embraced Id aspects but also internal object aspects {Narrative Notes to the 24th Session).

The thrust of “Notes on some Schizoid Mechanisms” is, as its title suggests, towards defining mechanisms characteristic of the paranoid-schizoid position, therefore of the first part of the first year of post-natal life, and consequently the source of points of fixation, in her view, for the psychoses: that is schizophrenias, paranoia and manic-depressive states. “The persecutory fears arising from the infant’s oral-sadistic impulses to rob the mother’s body of its good contents, and from the anal-sadistic impulses to put his excrements into her (including the desire to enter her body in order to control her from within) are of great importance for the development of paranoia and schizophrenia.” (p. 293, Works III).

Chapter 18: Wisdom and Mastery in Business

WHAT DO WISDOM, faith, and mastery have to do with small business? If you’ve gleaned anything from the preceding chapters, you know at least one thing: taking the qualitative growth, big-vision small-business path can be very challenging and thus requires inspiration, faith, mastery, and wisdom—sometimes in very large doses.

While life as an employee includes the more trying moments that can broaden perspective, wisdom, and skillfulness, someone else ultimately holds the responsibility for ensuring that the business remains viable (and for seeing that the garbage cans get emptied). A small-business owner, in contrast, has many of the same personal and professional responsibilities as his employees yet also walks the bottom line as the enterprise’s primary investor, decision maker, risk taker, and accountability holder. Add the higher standards and ideals of creating and sustaining a business aligned with big-vision priorities and practices, and the crowd begins to thin.

This is why a big-vision small enterprise can be a powerful vehicle for personal, professional, and spiritual development. Most wisdom and mastery schools include right relationship, right view or vision, compassionate communication, courage, service to others, and other big-vision principles among their primary tenets. To emphasize them as points of excellence and distinction in your business is to make them high priorities for refinement and development. This section begins an exploration of the symbiotic relationship between wisdom, mastery, and big-vision small business and how that relationship offers fertile ground for qualitative growth.
