When you want to make a big difference with one simple change to a photo, you cant beat converting it from color to black and white. The Ansel Adams approach doesnt just evoke nostalgia, it also puts the focus back on the subject in a powerful way. Going grayscale lets you salvage an image that you cant color-correct, as well as beautify a subject whose teeth need heavy-duty whitening or whose skin needs retouching. Those problems all but disappear when you enter the realm of black and white.
Does that mean you should set your digital camera to shoot in black and white? Heck, no! Its much better to photograph in color and then drain the color in Photoshop. That way, you have a truckload of artistic options like bringing back just a touch of the original color for a partial-color effect. And, speaking of color, Photoshop has several tools that let you change the color of anything, whether its a car or the hair on your head. You can also breathe new life into vintage photographs by adding a dash of color.See All Chapters

Remember that the people you work with are not workers or helpers or assistants or trainees or lackeys or gofers or employees or inferiors or superiors. They are people. And if you think of them as people — separate, important, unique human beings — they will sense it and will respond by trusting you, by helping you, by accepting your suggestions, even by forgiving your blunders.
Indeed, if people believe that you are acting in their best interests, they will support your actions, even if what you are doing is not in their best interests.
But if people do not believe what you are doing is in their best interests, they will not support your actions, even if what you are doing is in their best interests.
None of this can be faked, save by a consummate actor, which you probably are not. It must come from the heart. You must care about them as people. You must like them. If you cannot, forget about becoming an ideaist now before you waste half a lifetime striving only to ultimately fail.
Of course some people in management positions feel they should remain aloof from their “troops,” that getting to know them personally weakens their authority and limits their ability to lead.See All Chapters
Words ordered differently produce different meanings; and meanings ordered differently produce different effects.
Blaise Pascal, Pensées (1670)
The educated philistee assigns unconditional perfection and objective validity to a few principles and methods, so that, having found them, he can use them to judge any event, to approve or reject it.

Defining problems from an operative perspective
The first problem for clinical researchers is how to define the subject of their research. The configuration of the subject is a matter closely connected with a researcher’s theory of reference. Consciously or not, researchers filter the observed reality through their personal interpretive lens. Modern constructivist epis-temology has emphasized the problem of the observer’s influence on the observed phenomena (Arcuri, 1994; Heisenberg, 1958; Rosenthal & Jacobson, 1968; von Foerster, 1987; Watzlawick, 1981), and pointed out how every action carried out in the search of knowledge places at the centre of its reflection not only the object under observation but also the subject who observes it.See All Chapters

THE BASIC IDEA OF SOCIAL SECURITY is simple. Started during the Great Depression, it was devised to help all Americans prepare for their later years, particularly older people who had little chance of helping themselves.
The program takes in money from workers and their employers through payroll taxes and then pays most of it out to beneficiaries. It is called a pay-as-you-go or pass-through program because most of the money that comes in goes right back out again. It is also called an intergenerational transfer program because, in the main, the younger, working generation transfers money to the older, retired generation.
Social Security really includes two programs, Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI). OASI pays monthly benefits to retired workers, their families, and survivors of deceased workers. DI pays monthly benefits to disabled workers and their families. About 85 percent of all Social Security benefits are paid by the OASI program. In this book, we will treat the two programs as one (OASDI).See All Chapters

Harry Truman knew from the start that his would be the main job of speaking for the Democratic ticket, and he handled the task with competence. His emphasis was always on the record of Franklin Roosevelt, the successful course of the war, and the necessity of experienced hands to put in place the peace to follow. He taunted Thomas Dewey on the Republican isolationists who were still powerful figures in the challenger's party, although late in the campaign this message inadvertently involved Truman in intra-party unpleasantness. On the whole, Harry Truman did his job well, considering that Franklin Roosevelt's involvement in the struggle was relatively minimal until close to the end.
Truman, after being formally notified of his nomination at the ceremony in his native town of Lamar on August 31, went to Michigan on Labor Day, September 4, for a union picnic in Pontiac, a parade down Woodward Avenue in Detroit, a CIO rally of fifteen thousand in Cadillac Square, and a banquet given in his honor by the Detroit and Wayne County Federation of Labor. He reminded his listeners about “the greatest friend labor ever had—Franklin D. Roosevelt” and he told them: “Remember that and re-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt President of the United States.”1See All Chapters
