The news was getting worse. The last of the 12 fortresses that protected Liege had fallen, and day-by-day the Belgian Army had retreated, ineffectual in its efforts to stop the invaders. But at least the Germans suffered for each advance. Therese had heard that the headquarters of the Army, with King Albert, had departed Leuven the previous day. Although a rearguard defence was left behind, in reality the town's security departed with the generals, as did many of the residents, their belongings piled high on carts. There was a restless spirit in the convent: the Germans were coming.

Therese had fully embraced her work as record keeper, the role she had described and volunteered herself for to Sister Paul.

“So much has happened to these refugees, so much that is wrong. The authorities will need to know of their hardships. I'll spend time with them and write them down.”

Her words had poured out to Sister Paul, not in a way to convince, but as they came. Sister Paul saw her mission and was not about to step in her way.

10: Interpretation

From the beginning, interpretation has been central to psychoanalysis. For Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, and Melanie Klein the analytic model was about analysing, and you analysed by interpreting to the person what was behind his or her behaviour. This early and rather crude view of interpretation has been refined over the years. The refinement has led to many different schools of thought as to how interpretation should be used in the therapeutic encounter. These differences involve the questions of what, how much, and when an interpretation should be given.

Before exploring these questions, it is important to understand why interpretation is central to analytic technique. In discussing its development, it can be shown how this centrality has inhibited the growth of more age-appropriate ways of working analytically with children.

THE HISTORY OF INTERPRETATION

In his earliest formulations, Freud believed that the patient's disturbed behaviour was the result of a traumatic event that was hidden from conscious awareness. The memory of this trauma was split off from consciousness, but the unreleased affect associated with it remained festering in the psychic system. The function of the physician was to lance this psychic sore by analysing the person's history, in an effort to reveal and release the hidden trauma. He also discovered that the patient's dreams were especially ripe for revealing these hidden events or desires.

Chapter 4: Something to Prove

The loss was hard to take for Durant. It was made even harder by his poor performance. But the pain motivated him. Durant was named to the US national team in the offseason. They played in the World Championship. Durant set a tournament record by averaging 22.8 points per game. That helped Team USA win the gold medal. It was Team USA’s first world championship since 1994. Durant was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Team USA played against host Turkey in the championship game. Durant scored 28 points in the 81–64 win. At one point in the game, he hit two straight three-pointers. He pounded his fist to his chest afterward. It was a show of pride. But he refused to toot his own horn after the victory. He instead spoke about the joy he felt about his team winning the gold medal.

Durant only attended the University of Texas for one year. But he had a strong 3.0 grade-point average in college. That is a B average.

Durant has since taken summer courses at Texas. He is keeping a promise to his mother that he will earn his college degree.
